It is not a recent devlopment. I expect it is the reason that Seymour was traded. Seymour has rarely been as patient and cooperative as Wilfork.
A few MINOR players were extended through 2011. BTW, Banta-Cain was NOT one of them. He is an unrestricted free agent as of March 5th, if he isn't re-signed before then.
The Front Office exclusion on long-term contracts concerns MAJOR commitments. Brady, Wilfork and Mankins are the three currently affected, although Bodden could arguably NOT be re-signed because the current unwillingness to sign major long-term contracts.

That is a recent development. Or did the Pats not extend TBC or a few others earlier this season. It wouldn't have stopped them from making offers earlier in the year.
