For quite a few years now the Patriots have been the most effective or among the most effective offenses in the NFL. That has been the year in and year out roadmap for victory. However, this pre-season/coming into this regular season, this long standing reality appeared uncertain more than at any time in many seasons. Now, after losing Vereen, this uncertainty is even more stark. Plain and simple, it sucks the big one losing Vereen given how much this offense REALLY needed this potent all purpose yards gaining player.
With that said, Vereen got hurt, he's out, it is what it is. The Patriots have 15 individual battles to win over, approximately, the next 16 weeks and they very likely weren't going to win all of them whether Vereen was in there or not. Ultimately the Patriots need to win enough games to capture the division, that's it. If they have to do more digging and clawing and playing nastier than in years past, if they have to achieve more ugly, lower and tighter scoring games than us fans are used to, that's actually ok by me. I ultimately don't care how they win the needed amount of games to win the division as long as they win the division. The only thing I need to see out of this new roadmap for victory is an upward evolution/progression of the offense over the weeks. That, IMHO, must happen.
I don't prefer to see the Patriots O be markedly less potent than they have been in many years. But I am hopeful this unfamiliar situation will force this team to be a different kind of team than in recent years. Different meaning a 'meaner, harder, grittier' December/January team. One that can win by repeatedly punching the other team in the mouth and pulling out several 13 to 10 scoring games. If that can happen and if the injury gods smile upon us at the right time, I actually like the idea of going into the playoffs with a meaner/grittier team that is led by TB and featuring offensive players like Gronk, Ridley, Vereen, DA, JE, Kenbrell all of which, by then, should be healthy enough or now showing their capable enough of piling up yards when called upon. Whether that is too much 'rose colored glasses' thinking?? I don't really care. I prefer to look at it as an opportunity instead of wallow in the uncertainty.
