If Develin had cut back, Blount's choice would probably have turned out to be the right one. And had things unfolded a little differently without a cutback, then protecting the area he did could have been the right play as well.
It seems that in retrospect he didn't correctly diagnose the play, but we're all oohing and ahhing about how unusual the play was. So at worst, his lack of engagement wasn't as big a sin as it might be in other contexts. It's even possible that he was doing exactly what he was coached to do.
