PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Tuesday Patriots Training Camp Thread 8/13

The ship has sailed on any meaningful help at tackle. Not taking a look at a guy like Jonah Williams or even seeing what Tyron Smith has left in the tank is looking even more like a major blunder. Bill neglected the RT spot last year and this regime didn't seem to know what to do at tackle either. It is clear Lowe can't play so I don't know why we are giving him any meaningful reps. Kick Onwenu out to RT and see how Okorafor and Wallace look at LT and just hope for the best.

Whelp, this practice went as expected once 11 v 11’s got started. WR’s are not creating separation and OL is being eaten alive. Great for the development of our rookie qb’s. Just great.

I would be combing the waiver wire for tackles.
Maybe we can trade Bourne or Judon for a Tackle?
I would look hard at teams Olines.
This is where Scar shined, coaching up that lunch pail diamond in the rough previous turnstile to a valuable contributor.

Any change we can get Strange to move to tackle?
There are no tackles on the waiver wire now except Bakthari or Donovan Smith. I'd say Smith is better option simply because he played more and stayed healthier... but neither is ideal. You're looking at a guy who was like Riley Reiff last year, you throw a bunch of money at him and he barely plays.

Teams aren't looking to trade a tackle either, unless they're just so deep and one older vet wants to get paid. Jedrick Willis is going to be a free agent for the Browns next offseason, but he's on the PUP along with Conklin. Not sure they are willing to deal him and let Dawned Jones step in there, not sure they're healthy enough to do that or if Jones is good enough. But if you're looking for a miracle, you need to look at the Browns, Lions or another team with a great offensive line. Bad lines don't have great players... we should learn a lesson from the Chuks Okorafor debacle.

Strange may not play this year, they might be able to slide him in at guard and move Onwenu back outside if he miraculously gets healthy... if not him, potentially Mafi.

The answer was supposed to come in the offseason. Anyone recall when they took Polk in the second and some of us were screaming for tackles? These guys looked great in their debut, I'd much rather have one of them and a better free agent than Chuks, instead we have a logjam of WR's and no tackles.

Just to add some context to the last Maye drive and the pressure allowed. It looks like Eagles had their first team Defense out there against our second string OL. Still very concerning either way.

It looks like they played a lot of their starters throughout practice as the expectation is they wont play too much during the game.

Based on pretty much every single beat reporter's Twitter streams it seems like no matter who we had out there was overmatched against whomever the Eagles had out there.

Why isn’t Patrick Paul disqualified for playing on a bad Dolphins offensive line?

Patrick Paul is looking pretty good in Miami. Maybe should have gone in that direction vs Polk in Round 2.

Absolutely a fair second guess, and depending on how Polk does this year could be one we're making all year (though I also like Polk and think he'll be solid overall).

But the question is what they can do moving forward, and unfortunately good starting tackles are one of the rarest commodities in the NFL. Not only are they hard to find, but teams that have them don't generally give them away. This really is a 2025 problem to solve, and probably needs to be a priority at the top of the draft unless Peters pulls some kind of miracle over the course of the season.

Not really. Most 2nd string OLs won't do well playing straight up against a 1st string DL like Eagles have

I don't want to take anything away from the OL concerns, because they are 100% valid, but I will say that the Eagles have one of the better front sevens in the NFL, and have spent numerous first round picks on their guys there. So the problem was probably exacerbated by the opponent. Again, still a big concern, don't get me wrong.

Definitely going against an elite unit and likely, one of the NFL's best teams, but the fact that Maye can't even run through a play because it gets blown up every time is alarming.

Huh?

Pretty sure a division rival aren’t trading us a promising rookie left tackle.

Their DL is elite. Has been for a while.

Dial pushing for a starting spot...? Devonta Smith is a tough assignment
I dont think he looks on the level of Gonzo, the Joneses, or Marco but maybe he's beating out Austin and Bolden.

Who would notice if he's kicked out? I haven't heard a single thing about him this summer.
I think Jennings has passed him but I also think he's had some nice pass rushed at times including today. I wouldn't say he's invisible.

Guys. There's no one coming to save the day. This is what and who they are. With that, this doesn't mean they are gonna get their ass kicked every game. Guys will improve, get coached up and others will decline. They are what we thought they were.

Time start looking at this stuff. *spoiler alert* not much out there for FA LTs in 2025.

2025 NFL Draft Prospects: Offensive Tackle – WalterFootball

What about dealing some of our DB's and WR's for Trent Williams? We could give him a little bump in pay....and the Niners could then pay Aiyuk? Or would the dead cap from trading Williams still be terrible?

I do not understand why every other practice they mention Jacoby struggles with accuracy, he's been in the league 8 years and does not start because he's inaccurate, don't need to mention it, when he actually has a day with accuracy, worth mentioning.
It does seem Maye and Wolf are taking the gimme year and tanking it. Not the worst strategy for long term success but not going to be fun to watch.
