He's had 3 documented (and at least 2 non-documented) major concussions within the last 3 calendar years. I'm saying if his family actually cares about him, and not just about his paychecks, then yes, he should have a proxy.
It is his life right?

Sure. It'd probably be best if we were to do away with personal freedom entirely. You know, just to be on the safe side.
It’s done more frequently than you might think, when individuals mental condition makes them unable to made good decisions. Have you forgotten about the Brittany Spears conservatorship battle, for one example?

Then someone needs to save him from himself. You could make a strong argument that his brain's already too scrambled to make rational life decisions.
I can see from the replies after your post here that some are truly ignorant of mental illness.
But you are correct ... I know personally ... others know before you do.
You just don't take a pill for it ... often it takes many years of multiple medications and still it changes.

It is very hard to know how bad it is ... it's not just say ptsd ... those hits can bring on schizophrenia ... manic depression ...
personality disorder ... anxiety disorder ... bi-polar disorder ... dissociative identity and amnesia disorder ...
sleep disorder which make all the previous worse ... I got all 9 of those from a anterior cervical discectomy fusion.

I am not afraid to admit it ... if I take my 8 pills a day I am nearly normal but I do not play in the NFL ... danger lurks on each play.
anyways ... some of the ignorant replies after your post are why some men just don't seek help for it.

I am not saying he is or is not ... a competent psychological makeup is needed ... question forms will be sent to anyone he wishes and they will answer to how they see he was and is now ... and hopefully he gets the best ... and if his doctors feel he needs a proxy they will not fear telling him.

As for some of those replies ... do some research before talking **** ... they are diseases ... and they can never be cured ... just managed.
His brain will never be the same and quite possibly will get worse ... even shorten his life.
But it's his life right Andy??? I will leave it at that ... glass houses.

No .... his life is his immediate family ... wife and children ... you don't just make children ... they are your life and you theirs.

The NFL makes every player establish a baseline ...
When they get a concussion they can return to play upon returning to baseline.
Multiple concussions is different: The NFL is really dropping the ball here the process needs to change.
Artificial turf is partly to blame for increased concussions ... ah but the game is faster ... money over health for the billionaires.

Should Tua be cleared to play upon returning to baseline? NFL as I said needs to rewrite its' policy there.

I hope he retires ... just my opinion and many Dolphins players and fans are of the same mindset.

Has a player ever been not cleared by a doctor to return? You are definitely onto something with them needing to change policy I'm just not sure how that works. I think the only way it works is if all contracts are guaranteed otherwise you just start saying you are dizzy and have headaches. The NFL might need to seriously consider this before someone like Tua opens Pandoras box and forces it or even worse he plays through it and something more devastating happens.

I think there are 3 things at play: what Tua wants for himself and until otherwise told I assume he wants to play. How the league is currently set up to deal with this. And how we all feel they should/could be set up to deal with it.

There is no valid analogy between the two circumstances whatsoever.

Tua is not mentally ill. There has been no assertion by anyone that he is. Your post, though poignant and worthy of discussion another day, is entirely irrelevant to the matter under discussion.

Regardless, it’s his life and his decision, not yours.

This might be the single stupidest post I have ever read

Using your logic:
Anyone that smokes needs a proxy because they may develop lung cancer and obviously they are too stupid to make health decisions for themselves

Anyone that rides a motorcycle needs a proxy due to potential for head injury.obviously, they are mentally unsound if they chose to get on that death machine.

What about people that drink? They can pickle their brain and liver. More proxies

Idiotic. Clown world.
You’re making arguments for something that may happen as opposed to something that already has multiple times.

Actually they seem to be in a spot of trouble right now after their choke against the Raiders yesterday
And what a pretty choke it was too.

MIA will eventually allow him to play. It is all up to Tua. The current situation is that his case will be reviewed by outside neurologists. After a few weeks, depending on the MIA record at the time, the team won't make the decision. Obviously, the team doctors have to clear him, but they won't keep off the field because a history of concussions.
When you say outside neurologists what does that mean? Outside the NYFL?

Saying it is up to him to decide play or not, I think may not be true. If the experts evaluate him and say we advise you not to play and he says its up to me and the Dolphins say OK you want to play even though you have been advised not to, fine no problem. Then he receives yet another concussion. The **** will hit the fan with the Dolphins for allowing him to play.

Whenever I hear about one of these big name NFL players trying to decide to play again after multiple concussions, I think about the numerous NHL players who decided it wasn't worth it. Tua should talk to someone like Pat LaFontaine or Marc Savard to see what happens if he keeps playing and getting concussed. Those guys both went one concussion too many and have suffered from their decision.

How many players do you think are playing who have had more concussions than Tua? This isn't anything new. It's just a high profile position combined with the new ultra sensitive America.

And don't get me wrong he probably should consider retiring I'm just not going to get all self righteous about it he can choose to do whatever he wants. Hopefully he has good doctors and family and friends looking out for him but ultimately if he wants to play good for him and if he wants to retire also good for him.

Many. How many of them have exhibited severe head trauma issues when concussed ? Not as many.

I have very little knowledge of the severity and frequency of most players and that's my point. An OL gets to make this decision independently of the public eye. Tua has everyone trying to make the choice for him.

Aye, therein lies the rub. Does he understand that risks eventually become certainties.
Even so maybe he prefers several more years now when he is young to do what he loves and is passionate about in exchange for dealing with CTE later in life.
If his family is onboard he should have the freedom to do so.

If his family does not want him to play then it could be a selfish decision
Because they will have to deal with consequences as much if not more so than Tua
