PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Training Camp Day 9 - August 1 - 6pm STH Practice / Scrimmage

I think you could make a case that Boutte could be as high as WR3.

Just on the surface I would say it's pretty close between Boutte and Williams. From what I've seen I'd give a slight edge to Boutte even. Obviously there's a lot we don't see and obviously Williams being a rookie gives him a different trajectory but he also has to out preform before things get handed to him (he's not getting cut but he has to earn his reps too).

Similarly I wouldn't write off Bourne yet. Hollins might have an edge due to STs, size, blocking, or whatever but at the end of preseason it's still very possible Bourne is just the better receiver and we fill STs with a safety or something else.
If Hollins does make the 53, we would carry one fewer WR and one other special teamer.

I couldn't be there. Was it full-speed/full-contact, or did they let up (as usually is the case at these things).
It's the usual.

No one's full speed full contact until regular season. Not even in the preseason games and certainly not in any practices.

This type of thing and the joint practices maybe come with a small increase in speed/contact and I'd say this is still less than the joint practices.

I will be very interested in the Oline during the joint practices. Remember last year against Philly, the Oline was completely embarrassed. If I remember correctly it something like 18 sacks/pressures on 21 drop backs or something ridiculous like that. Oline still appears to be the weak point, really hoping for signs of improvement. Joint practices should tell us something.

I think Vrabs likes the bigger WR because he wants to be a team that can pound it down your throat in the run game like he did with Henry. If he's trying for the same offensive philosophy, that gives a big advantage to Hollins, who is easily the biggest/strongest WR on the roster. Listening to Vrabs presser (today, or the other day, can't remember), he even mentioned WR blocking.
This is correct. Josh and Vrabs love Hollins. I don't think Hollins is a great WR, but he is a great overall player.

I was there tonight. Even when Campbell got help he was still giving up pressures. Maye looked bad. Granted we missed the first 5-10 minutes but he was under Alot of pressure especially from Campbell's side and he rolled to his right and there was nothing there. He had a few throwaways, short gains, and sacks going out of the pocket. They looked like **** to me. The int was terrible. It's only one scrimmage but Maye did not look good. He threw a deep ball five yards OB to Diggs and Diggs had zero separation. The best play I saw was an end around to Diggs for about a 12 yard gain. Doubs looked much better than Maye. It's not apples to apples but Maye really did not look good. I really hope they're better than this Friday night
Yeah my worry meter on Maye is starting to move up to low levels, mostly based on the inconsistent accuracy. This is mostly because I’m sure like all of us, I hoped he would come tear it up right off the bat in training camp this year. But, he’s still young, his body is finishing developing, he’s processing coaching/system/player changes all around him. So, a lot going on both physically and mentally for him. I’m not going to hit significant worry mode no matter what happens this year honestly. If he struggles, let him actually experience just 2 years of good coaching and some continuity and I’ll bet it will pay off huge next year.

I’m a bit concerned that he’s being told hey this worked in college but not in this league.

I hope he can adapt, I personally wouldn’t of picked him at 4.

IMO, what he's learning is literally what every rookie learns when they get their first taste of pro football: the game is much faster, players are stronger and more athletic, and the talent disparity is a hell of a lot less than what it was in college.

I'm pretty sure that what he's learning is that he can't get by on just talent alone like he did in college. He's going to have to work hard to find every edge he can, be it from film study, pushing out that extra rep, etc.

he's also two years older than bourne... and 30% of special teams snaps does not make one a core special teams player...

when you are trying to sell me on a keepig this guy as a WR, I'm not down with the whole "he can block" argument... Tight end? sure... WR? not so much...

ymmv

When you are talking about a 5th or 6th WR the value added things count.

I'd like to see Bourne traded for a bag of balls.

I've only been reading this thread since page 6 and I still know more about the other injuries than you do.

Oh there was more bad than that...
Yet you can't list them?
Wallace, backup or cut. Bourne, backup or cut, Campbell came back in. So please list the devastating injuries the Patriots suffered?

From what I read it wasn't tackle to the ground, so I would assume no big time contact.
Pretty sure I saw that play live streamed and he was coming over the middle and got grabbed from behind like a horse collar type pull and then he went to the ground. It was hard to see numbers but when I saw the play I thought, wow, can't believe they are tackling like that (apparently, they were not supposed to), and then a minute later they showed Bourne on the sideline hurt so assume that was from that play.

That sounds like the play. It was definitely an over the middle crossing route. Obviously they aren't supposed to tackle but over the middle like that I gave the defender a break because it gets crowded over the middle but I didn't realize it was a horse collar. Definitely can't be doing that. I must have been looking at a different defender and not the one who pulled him down.

Actually found the video, it was not up high tackle as I thought but tackled him low from behind, see about the 4 minute mark in below

When you are taking about 5th or 6th receivers, it's depth.. you know, in case of emergency break glass... Bourne is a better receiver, period.

As for the special teams, eh, hollins isn't the second coming of Matthew Slater... He was a part time ST guy... So eh, that argument does nothing to sway me...

At the end of the day, it's 6 or one half dozen for me... Neither will be a huge contributor unless something goes horribly wrong... I have my preference, regardless of who stays or who doesn't, I'm not gonna get worked up over a bottom of the roster guy

Yeah that's the play. Not horse collar but almost a hip drop which is also outlawed.

I guess I got distracted by the defender on the front side who was trying to avoid after they went down.
