Ellis is a major liability at LB.
Tell everyone you didn't watch the games last year without telling everyone you didn't watch the games last year.

Elliss isn't a liability at LB. He was one of the better LBs in coverage and against the run. Not that facts matter to you. Andy.. You've been spewing this sort of garbage for 2 decades.

Are you forgetting we signed Hasty?

That makes at least five iirc. Rham, Gibson, Henderson, Larison, Hasty, just off top of my head.

There are 6 in camp currently. Terrell Jennings is the 6th.. I expect him and Hasty to be cuts and sent to the PS.

Dude you need to learn to evaluate LBs.
Put in the film.
He consistently was out of position in the run game. His reads were poor. In the passing game he lacked awareness of his zone and where receivers were in it.
If you think Ellis was a god linebacker last year, you are either making it up, didn’t watch the film or have no idea how to evaluate a LB. It is t even a close call. He struggled at every aspect of playing LB.

Negative

As a restricted free agent, Elliss was tendered by the Patriots at the low level of $3.26 million. They ended up matching the Raider's two-year, $13.5 million contract. So two teams thought he was worth paying-up for.

Ellis made 5 starts (11th most defensive snaps) in 2024, but had the 3rd most tackles, 6th most solo tackles, 5th most passes defensed, forced and recovered a fumble, made an interception, had 2 sacks and 4th most QB hits.

He also played the 4th most snaps on one of the best special teams units in the league. So if that’s not “good,” I don’t know what is. Good players exist on terrible teams in the NFL… all of them.

He played really well on a really poorly coached and schemed defense… plus he’s an exceptional athlete for his size. Assuming health he was a great re-signing.

Ellis was High Motor at the end of last year, it was mentioned OFTEN during the Game Day threads.
No one is saying he should make 25M per year, but I think he's useful.
6.5 is Chump Change for a decent player with that Motor IMO

YMMV

and 6.5M is way too much to pay a LB that according to Ring6 sucks at every aspect of LBing. Not sure why Ring has the hate on for him.

I really don't remember Ellis playing really well. I don't remember him being terrible, but I mainly remember his helmet defending more passes than his own hands. And if our run defense was as good awful as it was, it's hard to call anyone outside of Gonzalez "good" from last year's defense, as much as I hate to admit it.

Now, could Ellis look even better now that each unit has competent players now that can hold down their own job? Maybe! Fingers crossed.

He works hard. Vrabel and Ninko were NOT STALLIONS when we got them....how did they turn out?
I don't even pay attention to him anymore, been down that road.

I don’t hate him, I watched his play last year and I am being honest. We were a bad defense and he was one of the main culprits.
When you watch a lb play and they are often slow reading a play, and they are often taken out of position and run at, that’s bad lb play. When they drop into coverage and don’t get proper depth and appear unaware of the receivers in their zone that’s bad Lb play.
I’m not saying he’s a zero, I’m saying he is, based upon last years film, not a guy you want to be a front line LB on your team.
I mean look at the tape, you will see what I see.

Ranking statistically the middle of a terrible defense isn’t something to be proud of. Tavai led the team in tackles last year was he good?

Tackle statistic are meaningless without context. When teams run at you and gash your defense but you make the tackle after a 9 yard gain that’s not a feather in your cap.

Watch the tape. He is not instinctual as a LB reading a play and stepping up into the right place. That is doom for a lb. He seems lost in the passing game, it’s right there on tape.
Yes he has some physical skills that allow him to make plays in spite of his poor LB skills, and yes he’s a good special teams player. But the dude is not a starting caliber NFL LB. An hour of film study will tell you that.

He will be here, and he will have a big role on special teams. He should be a reserve lb and play situationally and if he begins the year as a starter he won’t end it as one, unless he learns how to think, read and react like a LB.
Again it’s all there on the film.

I haven't missed a Pats snap in many years. That said, I am not going to lie and tell you I've watched the tape again. I used to record all games and watch them over in the summer, but I haven't done that in a few years. I don't remember his play being as bad as you described when I watched it live, but that was 8 months ago, so I most certainly don't remember every play he did/didn't make. That said, the Pats matched a pretty substantial offer for him, so obv they see something in him that you don't.

I do recall hearing his name called for making tackles and other good plays a few times towards end of last season. Maybe not special, but a positive. Let’s see if he grows with better coaching and team performance.

They see a young guy who is a good special team player a good athlete and depth. We had a ton of cap room and a lot of openings.

Nowhere I’m seeing or reading does Chism make the cut. Everything I’ve seen says he’s been underwhelming during camp and probably a ps body.

Then you haven’t been paying attention. The post practice reports I watch nightly have reported that he’s always open, but they aren’t getting him the ball. Chism is going to make the 53.
