Trading Ryan Mallett in the Off - Season

Why dubious? He was open. And, was the easiest catch and throw to get the first down.

Yeah, more a joke about Shiancoe, who turned an excellent pass into an interception and was cut the next day.

LOL. I thought you meant from Mallett's view.

The tape of him I've seen and reports from practice.

ok....what tapes did you see? are you an expert on QB mechanics? exactly what is wrong with his mechanics?

which reports from practice? any links?

It's obvious who BB felt was at fault there

Very true.

It's a shame that with all of the bigger name TE's that have gone through this roster this year, the TE position somehow still ended up in need.

We saw duds with Schiancoe, Winslow, and arguably Fells. We saw injuries to Hernandez and Gronkowski, and Ballard remained on PUP (which was expected).

There are 6 right there, and all are pretty big names. Maybe next year Belichick goes with 8-9-10 TE's on the roster and cuts the WR position to 2?

It's been a pleasure to see Hooman progress throughout the year, and he has been a nice addition to the blocking aspect in my opinion. He has also been rather reliable to boot.

One doesn’t need to be an expert on QB mechanics to know a thing or two about movement, and more variation there is to a throwing motion the less consistency of accuracy you’ll see. Again, you don’t need to be a QB expert to know this, if you see a champion discus/javlin/shotput thrower you’ll see an identical motion over and over, better QBs will also have tremendous consistency in how they throw the ball. OTOH, Mallett moves in different ways over and over. If you feel like digging you’ll see that on one throw he’ll hit a receiver perfectly but other times he’ll miss wildly on a pretty short pass. If you don’t believe me look at his college tape and pre-season snaps.

This is one reason I don’t like strong armed QBs, how much ego do they have wrapped up in that strong arm? Are they really going to take criticism on what they feel is their greatest strength, especially from someone who can’t throw nearly as well as they can?

Brady sought out guidance on throwing mechanics and still does. McElroy strikes me as the type who would take direction and I think AJ McCarron would as well. It doesn’t appear that Mallett has and I wouldn’t bet on him doing so any time soon.

Are you really surprised?

1 ~ Nobody has been more obsessed with the potentially disruptive Impact of greater Depth of Talent at Tight End, Flex End, and Wing Back than I, over the last few years, nor celebrated with greater Joy Mad Bill's dramatic shift away from Split End ~ "Wide Receiver", to you Earthlings!! ~ and towards these 3 Positions, this year.

2 ~ But not one of the guys he looked at or signed ~ and there were, what? EIGHT of them?? ~ sped up my pulse, any: Every last one of them either lacked explosiveness or had very little rubber left on the tires, with the sole exception of a guy ~ Ballard ~ who was guaranteed not to play in 2012.

3 ~ Fells, I described as The Most Average Tight End in the Galaxy...and so he is.

4 ~ Brother Hoo came with a Resume that spoke to an utterly fascinating litany of Injury issues...but also to a phenomenal record as a Blocker.

5 ~ I screamed for us to steal WB Evan Rodriguez ~ who is being wasted in Chicago ~ as a reserve Wing Back to Aaron The Navigator...But that is really all we'll be lacking, once Ballard lines up with us, next year.

6 ~ However, for now, yeah: We have Depth at Tight End and Wing Back ~ we don't have what I'd call a Flex End on the Roster, nor do we really need one ~ but we certainly lack Depth of Talent: Nobody behind Kong or Aaron the Navigator can provide anything even faintly resembling the different Dynamic Dual Hybrid Threats of either.

But there was no reason to expect that any of the guys we signed would provide that Dynamic Impact.

Imagine this goal line scheme:

TE Gronkowski - LT Solder - LG Mankins - C Connolly - RG Cannon - RT Vollmer - TE Ballard - TE Hoomanwanui

QB Tom Brady

FB Tebow

RB Ridley

I'd like to see the 49ers try to stop this on 4th and Goal

While I didn't expect any of them to take over the position itself, it would have been nice to see a reception or two.

That aspect kind of did surprise me, yes.

It has been nice to see Hooman doing well so far in the blocking game though.

NO :bricks:

I don't want all of that circus and drama show interfering with this team.

He seems like a really standup guy, and a human being that offers a lot to this world, which can't be said about everyone.

He also seems like a good athelete on some level, although I'm not exactly sure where that level is specifically besides maybe a tough runner/blocker.

Either way I don't think that he would really offer much of anything that we either don't already have, or couldn't get elsewhere for a much easier tradeoff.

NO :bricks:

Does this work better for you?

TE* GRONK - LT Solder - LG Mankins - C Connolly - RG Cannon - RT Vollmer - TE Ballard - TE Hernandez

QB Tom Brady

FB Hoomanawanui

RB Ridley

*I was tempted to write "GR GRONK."

you don't have to be an expert to see certain things, but it would help if you actually looked......his actual throwing mechanics are fine.....over the top with a release point more than 8ft off the ground. if you were actually trying to do something more than being critical of someone because you simply don't like that, you'de realize that his inconsistencies have to do with his footwork more than his throwing mechanics. his release is quick enough and his throwing motion is consistent enough. his problems basically reside with him moving around and then setting his feet poorly. he has a tendency to lock his front leg and raise his back leg off the turf before the ball was out of his hand.....balance issues causing the ball to sail.

there was a thread on this last summer......you said there that he has all kinds of different releases without ever getting into details......please do

1. Easy on the condesending comments. If you disagree with me then state your case but the snide comments will get you no where.

2. What you talk about is distinction without difference, suppose it's not his mechanics but poor footwork accounting for the ball not going where it's supposed to, guess what? THE BALL ISN'T GOING WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO!

While I disagree with you on that being the only issue it doesnt matter, he's not consistently accurate, you've made my case for me. I'd hope a guy at his stage in a football career would work like crazy on his fundamentals so that he's spot on but he is either unwilling or incapable or doing so.

Oh WOW, look at this!

His inconsistent accuracy isn't a new thing.

Ryan Mallett's NFL Draft Prospects: Will the Real Ryan Mallett Please Stand Up? | Bleacher Report

Anyone who thinks the Patriots would get anything more than a conditional 6th or 7th round pick for a guy who's done nothing more than hand off and overthrow receivers by 10 feet in the regular season, and look like nothing more than check down charlie in the preseason...is pretty freaking delusional...while we're at it, maybe they can get a third rounder for brandon bolden, a second if we throw in his PED collection....
