This is something that I've been thinking about off and on for awhile.

Originally, we were supposed to have two 4th round picks, pick 118, and pick 131.

The deflate gate punishment takes the highest pick in the round, so we are losing pick 118.

To me, it would make the most sense to trade that pick back to as close to pick 131 as we can get.

My question is, is there something that would prevent the team from doing so?

Interesting idea, but I believe the #118 is in a "lock box" and they can't do anything with it.

OTOH, if the Pats engineered a trade that gave them the #117, then the #117 would go into the box and they'd get the #118 back.

I really wonder if it is "in a box"

I would like to think, at the time they made the trade with NO (I believe it was) that got them pick 118, they would've called one of the several teams picking in the back end of the draft, and asked if they want to move up. Even if it was for essentially anything (2017 or 2018 7th), and tried to create a 3-way trade.

I don't recall now the league's exact wording of the of the penalty (someone else may have the relevant quote handy), but it effectively said that the Pats are forbidden from doing anything with the pick that's to be forfeited.
