Welker was coming off major knee surgery, so your analysis is fatally flawed due to that alone.

The team has a talent issue at wide receiver already. Why would you even think of trading the best of the bunch?

First of all, I think trading Wes Welker is a bad idea. However, why would a knee injury affect him more in 2+ TE formations? Sciz's stats are legit, and it's not like we haven't known forever that Welker is much better in the slot than outside. So, it is conceivable that increased use of multiple TE formations will reduce Welker's overall production. That being said, we ARE going to use 3+ WR formations, and I want Welker as my third receiver!

The number of TEs has nothing to do with Welker recovering from the injury and the injury affecting his production..

How about this. How about you do the breakdown of 3rd down plays where Welker was on the field in 2 or 3 TE sets and whether or not that production was affected.

Then tell us whether it was affected SOLELY by the improvement of the TEs on the field or because of his recovering from the knee injury.

Then ask yourself this. Does the improvement of the TEs make Welker more deadly or less deadly to opposing teams.

Something else for you to ponder.
In 2009, Welker had 128 receptions for 1348 yards. The TEs that year had a total of 43 receptions for 546 yards.

In 2010, Welker had 86 receptions for 848 yards. The TEs had 93 receptions for 1161 yards.

But there is a big difference.. In 2010, Welker had 7 TDs compared to only 4 in 2009.

The Patriots offense IMPROVED because Welker was there AND the improvement of the TE position. You take out Welker, who is better than Branch, and you lose that.

*sigh* Looking at his "stats" in a vacuum, they are legit. Ignoring the fact that Welker's overall production was down because of his injury makes the argument bunk.
