The owners set up this system.

The option to avoid conflict of interest is to pass everything to independent arbitrators. No one wants that. They want to solve the problems, any problems, in house. They themselves agreed to this system. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to 'recuse themselves.'

Another option would be to have every owner and every GM and every coach sit on the committee, to carefully balance the views. That is impractical. Thus you elect representatives.

This is the system the Patriots agreed to. If they are guilty, the competition committee should recommend a punishment and the commissioner should consider it and act upon it.

Saying 'the competition committee can't do Jack ****' is silly. The system is set up for the committee to make a recommendation to the commissioner. Who is he supposed to listen to? It's like saying the Congress can't enact a budget. Well, technically, they cannot, but they develop the entire thing for the President's signature, without his direct input. Then the president is presented with a specific recommendation, based on the elected representatives, to act upon. He vetoes at his own peril.

Anyone who takes comfort in this technicality - well, Goodell doesn't have to listen to the competition committee, he's really a big softy at heart - is fooling himself.

i bet bill has tape and other evidence of most teams taping the pats defensive signals..just begging for the polian and co to make a big deal of this!

This is the most plausible theory I have heard yet! I agree... it is the only logical explanation for getting caught red-handed other than sheer stupidity.

If BB did get evidence of many other teams doing it and then baited the NFL into taking decisive action... he will then drop the evidence to the comish himself.

There will only be one choice at that point... fix the widespread problem while letting us off the hook (in return for BB not giving the evidence to the media).

The NFL saves face and we come out of it unscathed. Meanwhile, the rules get tightened and no one is allowed to do this anymore.

It may not be right, but it is one theory I can buy into.

Apparently there are a lot of camera men who are going to be looking for work come Sunday.

Conflict of interest?

**** Cheney - Halliburton.

Go ahead, move it. I just don't think conflict of interest exists anymore:bricks:

Aw geez. We had to bring politics into it, huh?

Goodell is still in new to the commissioner's job. If he is seen as favoring the Krafts, it will undermine him down the road, when he has to negotiate a new revenue sharing formula as part of the next CBA negotiations.

I think he is MORE likely to give the Patriots a serious punishment than another team which did the same things.

IF the Patriots have been caught red handed, I would expect them to lose a sixth or a seventh, plus a fine for the club and a suspension for some demonstratively involved individual.

For any other club, I would have expected a seventh at the very worst, and more likely just a fine and suspension.

If Goodell doesn't hold the Patriots to a higher standard, he will regret it.

Moreover, if Kraft actually owned Goodell (which he doesn't) he would be smart enough to tell Goodell not to give him any favors. Kraft will need to call in his markers when the next revenue sharing agreement is negotiated, and anything he does to strengthen Goodell now will increase the value of those markers then.

Tongue was firmly in cheek there, sorry.

A thousand apologies. I just laugh when I hear the term.

By the way, it sounds from the Miami story that there's plenty of video available and audio of the QBs audible is more important.
