Sometimes the team lets you pick any available number (rare), sometimes the team assigns you a number (as they did with Ross Ventrone, because they apparently still had some of his brother's jerseys lying around), and sometimes they give you a choice of certain numbers (e.g., Gostkowski was told "3 or 5—pick one").
