The Patriots' rookie class

I counted Lockett as he is shown as a rookie and has been a contributor on ST. He was not a Patriots draft choice or even a Patriots UDFA in TC as I recall.

He went to Cleveland's TC as a UDFA and was claimed by the Patriots after the final roster cuts in September...

He deserves to be counted with the rookies despite his time with Cleveland.

Don't forget about Pryor.

The best part about it is that Brace, McKenzie, Tate, Ohrnberger, Bussey, and Richard all seem to be next in line at their positions.

Amazing how well we managed to cope with the loss of Scott Pioli on draft day

Where are Mel Kiper and the other so-called experts now who gave the Pats low draft grades for 'reaching' for Vollmer, and passing on other sure-fire studs when they traded down?

Pioli's flame has gone out it would seem.

There is another factor you guys did not mention; the Patriots and BB in particular had more time to scout players last year...alas instead of playing into Feb.

Well, let's not go crazy. BB with a staff of Walsh, father Ryan, Landry, and Lombardi would have a hard go being .500 with the roster in KC. IN fact, I applaud Pioli and friends for sucking less than anticipated and their big win vs Pitt (and, yes, I saw today's final).

Could Floyd Reese have been a factor here? He's always had a solid history of evaluating talent.

BB would stay true to his mantra and on trade picks to accumulate more down the road for future use.

Kiper was with most of the folks on this board who wanted another OT or two as the choice intead of Vollmer. Me, I wanted a guard.

I was kinda pissed off that we kept on tradeing our pick because I wanted Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews but after all that it was worth it.Guys like Vollmer,Edleman,Ingram,Chung,Tate.Butler have shown alot promise.Hats off to BB and the scouting staff.Bob Quinn deserved that promotion.

They all went to see Michael Oher's movie "Blindside",when they should have gone to see "Tiger Tank"...............The Sebastian Vollmer Story.

53:
Butler
Chung
Edelman
Vollmer
Ingram
Pryor
Lockett
Brace
Orhnberger
Hoyer

IR:
Tate
Bussey
McKenzie
Agnone

PSquad:
Grady
Richard
Myer

Final score:
7 consistent game day participants, 2 of whom are Special Teams regulars only.
1 #2 Quarterback.
2 developing slowly on the 53.
4 lost to IR.
3 still plugging away on the Practice Squad.

17 Total Rookies...and there's still three Navy kids leftover on the Reserve/Military list for 2011.

BB said this was a very deep draft class, it would seem he wasn't blowing smoke.

Remember reading somewhere that 23 of our 53 are udfa's... which says a lot about the draft prognosticators...

Don't forget about TE Robbie Agnone, who is on the PS/Injured list. Myers replaced him.

That's a little aggressive.

UDFAs (including players on IR):

QB: Brian Hoyer (Tom Brady drafted)
RB: BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Laurence Maroney, Sammie Morris, Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk drafted)
WR: Wes Welker (Randy Moss, Brandon Tate, Isaiah Stanbeck, Julian Edelman and Sam Aiken drafted)
OT: Mark Levoir (Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer and Nick Kaczur drafted)
OG: Stephen Neal, Dan Connelly (Logan Manknis, Dan Koppen, Rich Ohrnberger and George Bussey all drafted)
DL: Mike Wright (Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Ron Brace, Myron Pryor, Jarvis Green drafted)
LB: Gary Guyton, Pierre Woods, Eric Alexander (Jerod Mayo, Adalius Thomas, Derrick Burgess, Tully Banta-Cain, Shawn Crable, Tyrone McKenzie and Rob Ninkovich drafted)
S: Brandon McGowan, Bret Lockett (Brandon Meriweather, James Sanders Patrick Chung all drafted)
CB: Leigh Bodden, Kyle Arrington (Darius Butler, Shawn Springs, Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite all drafted)
ST: Chris Hanson (Stefan Gostkowski, Matt Slater and Jake Ingram all drafted)

So I count 15.

We seem to be completing our move to rebuilding our roster in the style of the colts, lots and lots of youngsters. Going into this last offseason, we didn't know where we would put more than 3-5 rookies. After all, Belichick used to like minimum priced vets for his depth. And now Pioli is gone and the old vets are gone.

What does this say about last year's team? We brought in so many kids and in addition brought in Bodden, Springs, Banta-Cain, Burgess, Ninkovich and McGowan. The defense was being revamped slowly but surely under Pioli. The world changed. Belichick put the program on overdrive.
