I wonder how many of these guys are cut candidates who took the opt out value as a financial benefit over being released.

Unless you are in the high risk category there is not much financial benefit you gain for opting out. And even then it is only 300k. The only ones who'd really benefit are high risk fringe players that are not eligible for vet minimum deals.

In fact players like Hightower put themselves into a precarious situation where they will be on a fully non guaranteed contract with no dead money next year.

This just in, the entire NY Jets team has decided to opt out of the NFL season.

But yeah, I could see high profile players on bad teams just take the money and sit out.

Obviously what you don't know is how to support your thesis. Where's the evidence that they have handled it improperly? They have cancelled the preseason, but the regular season is still set to start on time. They have an agreement with the players regarding how to proceed. They have procedures in place to allow players to opt out.

What exactly should they be doing that they haven't done?

They should have came out and flat out said no fans in the stands when this started getting worse 6 weeks ago. Don't cop out and default to local state governments.
They should have had an agreement in place far earlier than a day after most rookies were supposed to report.
They should have made the "opt out" date weeks ago but they couldn't since they wanted to be fight the NFLPA on everything. Now we have players opting out as camp is supposed to start and the teams will have to scramble to replace them.

Basically anything they have done should have been done at least a month ago.

I mentioned this about a month ago. NFL is a sport where it is not uncommon to see a player get a big signing bonus and play for a year or two for significantly less money in annual salary than the signing bonus was. So with opt outs, some players may potentially keep the big money and lose the smaller annual salary.

I haven't yet seen evidence this is happening though, but I really don't know the details of non-Patriots players' contracts.

Given my tendency toward pessimism (maybe a bad habit, but I have my reasons) and reading what tea leaves I've seen, I have been running on the assumption from the start that there would be no NFL games this year, or at most a stunted season.

I'd months ago resigned myself to merely wondering where the Titanic's deck chairs will end up, so none of the song-and-dance of preparing for a season ever had any traction on me.

Why is it that NE has a higher rate of opt out than other teams?

Why would they do that? If fans are allowed, they want to have fans and the fans will want to go. It would be unwise to set a season-long policy regarding fans in the stands in mid June.

They should have had an agreement in place far earlier than a day after most rookies were supposed to report.

Weaksauce. It was a labor negotiation. Oftentimes you need a deadline to get things moving. Things are starting on time, so it is pretty weak to criticize them for waiting too long.

They should have made the "opt out" date weeks ago but they couldn't since they wanted to be fight the NFLPA on everything. Now we have players opting out as camp is supposed to start and the teams will have to scramble to replace them.

That also would have been unwise, and quite likely unfair to the players. I doubt the players would have accepted so early of an opt out date.

I've resigned myself to wondering where the Titanic's deck chairs will end up.

They will start the season no matter what. A lot can change in a month. We are seeing some states go through their peak highs. MLB has continued their season but we shall see how long it last.
