The Official Gonzo Extension Watch Thread

*In three less games..

Pay the man..

Still "not close" on extension talks apparently. This is not a good sign. If I'm Gonzo I consider sitting out with a faux hammy issue rather than playing for $2 million and risking injury and not getting his payday in an extension, although I guess he's got $18 million guaranteed already.

That won't be popular with fans or coaches, but the NFL is a business and tough to blame him for operating that way when teams do that alll the time. I think everyone in the NFL would understand that he's not really injured, but just positioning himself for an extension or trade and extension.

Does the team have any leverage at all?

Gonzo can simply come to camp and refuse to participate and risk injury until a there is a new arrangement. I don't think that there is a limit on this tactic. During the season he would lose 1/17 of his pittance of a salary, a low-cost insurance policy.

If he refuses to play, the team continues to retain his rights. You cant just sit out the term of your contract as a player.

Yes, the player used to have to show up willing to play Game 10. I don't know the current rule.

I don't think that he has to be willing to play Game One to lose the contract year.

Gotcha. If he decides to sit out he should be on the trade block.

Surtain is no doubt arguably the best in the game, but many are forgetting his team got to the QB almost twice as many times as the Pats did.

Gonzalez is playing behind a pedestrian pass rush yet now recognized among the best in the game. Imagine what he’ll be able to do if he had what Surtain and Stingley has. What Ward had with Garrett.

It’s difficult to find competent CB’s in today’s game and BB drafted him because the Smurf CB’s of 2022 got Moss’d on a weekly basis.

The Pats will pay him….eventually.

Edit: Trent McDuffie's contract is so ridiculous which is going to make things extremely difficult for both the Seahawks and Pats to sign these CB's.

Gonzales is NOT going to be playing for "just" $4MM this year. It's $4MM PLUS whatever the signing bonus is going to be, and that will likely be somewhere between $25-35MM.

The Pats have every right to try and slow play this 4th year of Gonzo's 5 year rookie contract. They are trying to build a championship roster if they are going to have to extend and max pay rookies after their 3rd year rather than the usual 4th year, especially when you will have to max pay a QB next year to the tune of 60-70MM/yr.

That is about 30-35% of your cap on just TWO guys. You CANNOT build a championship roster doing that. When Gonzo's deal is done, I'll be interested most in seeing what his cap number is going to be for the next 2 years. Remember the Pats have the leverage. Anything they give him is a reward for his good play and I see his agent's demand that he be paid as the top 2 CB in the league this early is overreaching.

You say that we cannot pay Gonzo top dollar.

So, what is your suggested solution?

I suppose that we could add a 2026 bonus to his contract and remove the right to franchise tag in 2028.

The team would have him for 2026 and 2027, delaying decisions 1-2 years.

Something that will pay him in the $25mm/yr area over the next 2 yrs and pays him as a top 3 cb/yr after his rookie contract expires on a 5 year extension.

The Pats get a small discount the next 2 hrs, Gonzo gets around 50 million the next 2 years instead of 21 and gets market deal for top CBs for next 3 years.

He gets GFY money THIS season, a year early while getting a market deal for 3 years beyond . sounds fair to both parties.

I agree.

Now, we just need agreement from Kraft, Vrabel, Gonzales and his agent.

I'm not as confident that Gonzalez is staying here as I once was.

He was great in the Super Bowl, he had improved over the last half of the season. I want to see if he can repeat that late success for another year before he gets rewarded with a mega contract.

You trade him. Hate to say it but a boundary corner to me in the modern NFL isn't worth what it used to be. I know they still pay these guys but the time is coming that they will be devalued. Pass rush and safeties are the big items to me.

Or they can just pay the best corner in football, they’re supposed to be a draft and develop team, pay the man.

If you're GM - how much? $40 million for a corner?
