BB said it best in his presser. The Pats just didn't execute well enough. Plus...all the hype...Pats own the Steelers yada yada yada...in a game that of course would be a good win but not a must at this point (could come back to haunt them though). It was just a letdown. Still in good shape, so bring on the Giants.

Pitt played man coverage today. Doubled Welker and dared the other guys to beat their coverage, which they couldn't or did but Brady did not see them due to heavy pressure. Why we did not spread them out, even with our two TEs is beyond me. Bringing our TEs closer to our OL put them in bunches and helped Pitts defense by creating all that traffic and unpredictability close to the LOS. Gronk and Aaron should have been spread out along with Welker and Branch to create space and throwing lanes. Obviously they thought we could exploit them with this formation and personnel but as soon as Pittsburgh showed that they weren't going to play zone, we should have adjusted. Just seemed like a clusterf@ck.

It's not a surprise that when we finally started to speed it up and spread Pitt out on our last drive, did Brady finally see some passing lanes and get comfortable.

Also, as good as Branch is at finding holes in zone coverages, he just isn't quick/fast enough to create separation against man to man. Pitt concentrated their coverage on
Welker so they took him away for the most part. Aaron just doesn't seem to have the same quickness as he had since his knee injury. He couldn't really create separation either. The one guy that I thought created separation was Gronk. I'm not just talking about those delayed routes he ran, but even when he there was a guy initially on him, he was able to get pass his defender. With his height and wingspan, Brady should have thrown it to him a lot more today. He was the only one who got separation consistently.

Also, I love Faulk to death, but giving him the most snaps at RB in his first game since his injury was weird. I thought Lawfirm should have been given more touches and also Woodhead. Woodhead at this point, is a better runner than Faulk. Wood head has been in better sync with our offense as well. Again, I love Faulk, but to give him the most PT at RB today was weird.

As far as our defense goes, it's a BIG personnel problem. Guyton and Ihedigbo do not belong as starters in an NFL defense. Molden should not be counted on anymore than ST duties. Ninkovich, for all his effort is as good as Guyton in coverage. Spikes, as good as he is defending running plays, seems lost out there in coverage as well. Just plain awful in coverage.

Merriweather, Crable, Wheatley, Wilhite, Butler, Cunningham, and Brace not being solid contributors on defense is the main problem we have. Those guys are either off the team or on the bench.

To be honest, what can BB really do with this current crop of players at LB and DB? He's tried man coverage, which was a failure and now our zone looked like swiss cheese.

Brady needs to play lights out for us to really make it happen in the playoffs.

We can do this ! LOL.

I thought more than anything Faulk's coming of PUP and playing such a big role highlights the dropoff we have seen in Woodhead this year. He has gone from a guy who got 10 highly productive touches a game last year to what is now a deep reserve role.

I have to wonder if he's been nagged by injury. Tough to imagine him regressing for any other reason, though I suppose it's always possible.

True, but wasn't that also the case in the Jets game in the playoffs?
If I recall correctly, they were expecting a lot of man coverage, but they got a lot of zone.

I don't remember a whole lot of specifics about that game (selective memory), but it was definitely new. That's the Pats' weakness right now. They're quite possibly the best in the league at preparation, so teams just have to pull out a new trick to leave the Pats completely clueless until they manage to adjust, at which point it's just a matter of staying ahead in adjustments.

How come the Patriots don't USE some of their talent ?

I really don't understand why the Patriots pass up quality for quantity when it comes to the draft, yet when they draft so-called talented guys like Taylor Price, or Shane Vareen or Steven Ridley, they wind up standing on the sidelines all game. Obviously, injuries had something to do with Price and Vareen, but they seem to be 100% healthy, and they are either standing on the sidelines dressed. Or not dressed at all. Price showed in the preseason that he has talent, and has learned the play book (unlike Ocho Stinko). Vareen, for Christ's sake, can't we use he speed and talent on the kick return ? Ridley, rushes for 97 yards on only 10 carries, and he's only carried the ball 3 times in the last 3 games.

Granted, it was nice to see Gronkowski and Hernandez used immediately, but I'm so tired of the Pats passing up primo talent for tons of draft choices that don't even make it onto the field, or just downright suck. You can flame away if you like, but I can give several examples of players we could have picked that could have helped continue the Dynasty, unfortunately poor drafting has killed the Dynasty.

They had hardly any plays early. When they did finally have the ball, they were in a come-from-behind situation.

He did, Brady didn't put the ball where it was supposed to.

I mean double the reps he got today.
Brady didn't give him a chance with that throw. We needed that

Re: How come the Patriots don't USE some of their talent ?

Ask Bill, I'm sure he will tell you

I disagree. It's not about making sure you don't hurt a unit's feelings. It's about winning. What did you see in that game up to that point that gave you confidence the Patriots would force a 3 and out?

None. They could have forced a fumble or a tipped ball int, that would have given O good field position to win the game.

But you lose that game if the onside kick is not executed perfectly. There was too much time left for that play.

Re: This team is as soft as Marshmellows

Hmm. No one thought or said that after the Dallas game. Pittsburgh heard all week that they couldn't beat Brady and they played out of their minds. We on the other hand were flat. Simple as that.

Re: Patriots are the Pig that built its House from Straw

I am so puzzled how a team with huge surplusses in premium draft picks can field such a mediocre defense. Castoffs, Jags and a few home grown boys....but not one special athlete.
On offense, the lack of speed at WR is mind boggling.

I'll just repost a comment that I made earlier.

I think the onside kick was just dumb in that situation. even if it had worked to perfection it was not the smart thing to do. That was saying to the D, we don't trust you. Makes a bad situation worse.

A big game with a dumb call…dejavu of the Jets game/fake punt muffle.

i know brady has devloped a great repour with deion, but the defense knows that time to find another outlet...

I think you can talk about scheme, adjustments, etc. all you want. At the end of the day the Pats lack talent on defense. Wilfork was the only above average talent on that side of the ball today (a healthy Mayo would be 2). Outside of that it is a bunch of role players and JAGs.

+1. How in the world did BB let it come to this? This defense truly looks horrible, with no real hope on the horizon.

That being said, the on-side kick was a big mistake. Our last TD was a huge momentum shift. You could just feel every Steeler fan in that stadium going "Oh sh!t, here we go again with Brady." Ben was already flustered, whining for a PI call that was nowhere close to being one, and I feel our D could have made it's ONE stop of the game at that point.

Oh well, just a total collapse on all levels, but I agree that we have some serious personnel issues in the secondary, and to a lesser extent WR, KR, and LB.

No idea. I think BB is Just stuck in his ways

Re: Patriots are the Pig that built its House from Straw

Straw is going green and thats in today.

Re: Patriots are the Pig that built its House from Straw

We had 5 sacks today. Whatever problems their are, are with the secondary. 5 sacks on Rothlisburger with no pass defense is actually outstanding IMO.

We do need a deep threat. Give Price a chance

Price ain't getting his chance this year....obviously BB doesn't think he is ready this year and won't get any shot until next years training camp.....This year Ocho and Branch are your NE Patriots deep threats......yay!
