The need for Gonzo is glaring..

I seriously think Dugger should start cutting into Spillane's snaps at LB.
He's physically competent, and is a guy who plays mostly on instinct and chasing the ball and making good tackles... something that apparently Spillane forgot how to do.
He definitely faster then Spillane...and probably about 10 LBs lighter. He should be rotated in more often. He has something to prove.

Spillane isn't the problem. Yes he missed some tackles last game.. however...I will continue to say this.. the front 7 holds up.. the have been pressuring the QB and doing a good job against the run.. when you're secondary continues to give up plays it exposes the LBs.. ideally you want your safeties to be able to handle RBs out the backfield they have the speed to keep up with most rbs.. Achane has elite speed and he makes even Fred Warner look foolish..

Spillane had 5 missed tackles in one game. THAT is a problem. He's leading the entire league in that category with Ellis 2nd or 3rd. Yes that is a problem that has nothing to do with the DL or secondary. Tackling is tackling. It's effort and having the wheels to get there in time. The inside LB's are A problem right now.

We are 5th in the NFL against the run. Spillane is a part of that. Sure he missed some tackles.. it happens.. if it continues to be a thing then ok you may be on to something.. I have more faith right now that Spillane can make tackles then the secondary can cover... and stopping the run has every bit to do with the DL and they LBs unless the secondary is stopping then the run by that metric.

We are 5th because the DL...not because LB's or the secondary.

The DL and the LBs.. I mentioned secondary because they are what is failing not the LBs or the DL.. I'm trying to explain what the problem is it's not the LBs.. I agree they could play better.. however the DBs are the ones giving up 30 yard plays. Can we agree there?

What do you think about Marty next to Spillane and Ellis in on red area?.

I want Marty out there with Spillane. I don't care that they are both 220-230. The DL is getting it done for the most part against the run. I am willing to concede the run against the LB's if they get through the DL but with Mapu...they absolutely should be better in coverage. So conceding the run at ILB won't hurt much because it's already happening. Bringing in Mapu "should" help with coverage however.

Agreed. You and I both wondered about Marty back during camp.. from the looks of it he appears to be well appreciated by Vrabel for his versatility and STs play. I like Ellis as a situational/rotation player.. Marty should in fact be in the lineup.. he has what you need to cover backs and TEs.

NE is 5th vs run because opponents choose to pass at will against NE instead.
Rushing attempts vs NE....39 (3rd fewest in NFL)
Passing yds vs NE......315 (32nd)

Ellis had 5 PD's last season in a part time role. That's not bad. It's early but I had hopes he would improve on that this season and be a semi-coverage LB. He doesn't have a single PD yet ad his tackling had been bad. While I do think Mapu is a bit fragile...you got to take the training wheels off and play him more. Whether it's as a box SS or LB....his role has been similar.

Opponents are not running because of the DL. Works for me.

Not "some". He missed 6.

Agreed here. I'm happy to see Marty who was a mystery man in NE for a bit. He absolutely seems to be a player with more playing time hopefully can become what the defense sorely needs in speedy coverage LB.. he has the ball skills
