It's not just Jerrah has this compulsion to talk a lot, but his choice of topics that keeps this legend-in-his-own-mind a candidate for Bonehead of the Year. He's truly insane in his Don Quiotic quest to talk his way out of not being a football fool. The topic is his blessing for the Raiders to move to Las Vegas. Other owners likely will support it. Pro sports has avoided gambling like the plague - the one thing they fear the most (1919 Black Sox Scandal.) For a league to preach on cheating, this is the ultimate hypocrisy.

Las Vegas Raiders? NFL owners like Cowboys' Jerry Jones may be warming to idea

As duplicitous as this "integrity" issue is, what concerns me as much is the Davis family penchant for moving their franchise from city to city chasing the eternal bottom line.

It must be difficult to be a Raiders fan... how do they define a "Raiders homer"??...

LOL.......in case anyone hasn't noticed, the team is currently based in OAKLAND

Vegas is a substantial step in the right direction

the novelty of the strip goes away real fast when you live there

I can vouch for that. One of my friends moved out there and she said the strip got really old after about 3 weeks. Most of the people that actually live there hang out and party off the strip.

As for the move itself? I can't imagine the casinos being too happy with this news. They want people in there as often and as long as possible dropping the kids college tuition and the mortgage payment at the Craps and Blackjack tables. They don't want people at a football game.

All that said, it's going to be funny hearing about the first high profile incident in which a hooker gets punched in the face by one of the players. The Integrity League will really have to scramble to sweep that one under the rug.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Sports like to avoid the appearance of impropriety, and maybe having a team in Vegas isn't the best if that's the goal. But gambling is (a huge) part of the fabric of the NFL's popularity, everyone knows that, and I don't think there's anything genuinely problematic about having a team there apart from the optics to a small subset of people. If the concern is players getting into trouble, well, they can and have gotten into trouble everywhere else too. If the concern is Big Gambling having an easier time muscling players into throwing games and point-shaving, well, I don't think proximity to Vegas is a necessity or even a significant factor for that either. We say "Any Given Sunday" when a team that's clearly better fails to blow out a bad team, or the game is closer than we assume...maybe that phrase could be modified to "Someone's on the Take." I'd be pissed if I was a Raiders fan though. The only place they should allowed to move is to Tattooine to become the Tusken Raiders, because cross-marketing.

The 1919 White Sox had been one of the better teams in the AL for several years, who had a bunch of great, underpaid players and a ****bag owner. And I'm glad they did it, because I can't imagine a world without Field of Dreams.

There's absolutely nothing about having a team in Vegas that compromises the integrity of the game relative to any other city in the country. It does, however, expose the NFL's hypocrisy as they have done everything they can to prevent sports betting from being legalized in other states.

They will probably install gambling gaming screens into the stadium seats so football fans can gamble while they watch the game. I wrote this as a joke, but I could see it happening.

Besides having typical table games (slots, blackjack) they could have micro-bets on every aspect of the football game, even going down to betting on individual plays.

What could be interesting about Vegas is that the visiting team fans will have this great incentive to vacation there while their team is in town. I could see it being very lucrative even if the Raiders continue to be bad.

This sounds like a bad idea for the NYJFL*. Let's do it!:D

But....isn't gambling legal in a bunch of places now including MA? A team being in what was one of the only places in the US where you could gamble isn't a big deal since it's legal in many states/cites where there are NFL teams.

Technically Nevada is the only state where sports gambling is legal. NJ was pretty close to legalizing it a few years back but it was evetually shut down.

Nevada remains the only state where true sports gambling is legal, and by "true sports gambling" I mean the ability to wager on the outcome of individual games, as well as assorted proposition bets. Delaware has a VERY restricted ability to place parlay wagers on NFL games. And, obviously, daily fantasy is legal in many states (although DFS has a very uncertain future).

When Delaware tried to legalize sports betting, the NFL led the charge to file suit preventing it from being allowed. When New Jersey tried to legalize sports betting, the NFL did the same. They went after sports betting with the same zeal they went after Brady. Their argument was - and I swear I am not making this up - legalized sports betting in the same states where games are played impacts the integrity of the game.

I'll pause so you can stop laughing......... ok.....

They get away with the hypocrisy of playing in London, where sports betting is legal, because people don't generally view London as a gambling mecca. But now that they may be moving to Las Vegas, they get exposed for being pretty darn hypocritical.

Much like our friend Tom Brady, New Jersey argued against the NFL in federal appeals court and lost (NJ lost both rounds, whereas Brady won the first round and lost the second).

NJ requested an en banc review, and it was granted. The review has already taken place this past February and we are awaiting the ruling.

New Jersey is represented by Theodore Olson and the NFL is represented by Paul Clement. Sound familiar? :D
