Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

Why is that story dated February 6, 2012?

Shhhhhhh! We have just found a tear in the time/space continuum. If you are nice, I will PM you a link with tonight's winning Powerball numbers or the link to where you can watch the completed streaming broadcast of the upcoming Super Bowl now (that fourth quarter catch is worth it..... Oops, I said too much).

Don't say that too loud. I can see it now ESPN breaks the news on time/space continuum-gate.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

I guess I saw more in that article than other folks. I think it's a B-School case in Leadership (in contrast to "Management").

Four things stood out to me:

1) A leader isn't afraid to deliver bad news in person. "Myra and I went out to lunch with him and Debby [Belichick's then wife], and I explained it." Think of all the managers you know who would have someone else deliver the message or would deliver it across a desk in a corner office with a third party there to escort the other guy out as soon as the deed was done.

2) Leaders aren't afraid to let their top managers know that they are betting their career on a decision. "The next spring Belichick wanted Brady to play over Bledsoe. 'You'd better be right,' Kraft told him in a staff meeting." Most people focus on the fact that Kraft backed Belichick's decision as an example of good management practice. Indeed he did and it was that. But, he had also told made it clear that there was no room for error in the decision.

3) Leaders are willing to do what their best managers suggest even when they are not sure they agree. "'I love the guy,' Kraft said of Bledsoe. 'That was a tough one. But you've got to back your key managers when they make a decision.'"

4) Leaders are risk takers. "'In this game,' he [Kraft] said on Sunday night, after the Patriots had arrived in Indianapolis for their sixth Super Bowl under Kraft, 'you better take some risks—or you'll have a nice team, and once every 10 or 20 years you'll be good. That's not what I want to be about.'"

Excellent observations.
This MBA grad suggests you teach case studies at a B school.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

Interesting read. While there is nothing new, it's still a good retrospective read.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

Irony of ironies: Parcells, who stayed on to run the Jets' front office, and Kraft were the ones who had to hammer out the deal. "When [Parcells] called to discuss it," Kraft said, "my secretary walked into my office and said, 'Darth Vader's on the phone.' I knew exactly who she meant." Finally they agreed. Belichick cost New England its first-round draft choice in 2000.

LOLOLOLOLOL. Good read btw.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

For those of you who would like to see highlights of the last Patriots game Robert Kraft watched from the stands as a fan, I give you:

1993 NFL Primetime Week 18 Miami Dolphins vs New England Patroits - YouTube

What an arm Bledsoe possessed........too bad he never learned to stop throwing off the back foot. If he had a Tom Martinez, no one would be debating who the greatest QB of all-time was.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

That's nice but how did your daughter's soccer team do this year?! d%#*!@t Pete, the suspense is killing me!!!!

Hey, you're not that guy who wrote the "Management Secrets of the NE Patriots" book, are you?

If so, that was an excellent work!

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

Interesting history.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

Is that this week's cover?! If so, awesome!

KRAFTWORK

The Boss Robert Kraft on the cover of SI this week

Usually I don't buy these types of magazines because its 80% advertizing and 20% newsworthy print, but this weeks edition looks special.

A must buy IMO

Geez, if you didn't get chocked up watching that, you have no soul. The man wears his emotions on his sleeve. A very touching tribute to Myra Kraft and interview.

Re: Bob Kraft on NFL Live

Bummer, I just sold my soul for a Patriots victory Sunday

OT, but re: Bob....

He's on WFAN with Francesca and has been going on for a while. It's been a long interview covering just about everything. If WFAN does replays, people might want to catch this later on.

He hasn't been able to watch that Giants Super Bowl, either....

What Patriots fan or player has?

Ok, OK. I hope the coaching staff has.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

I'm going to sound really nitpicky, but the only point in that article by King that I would take issue with is where he says "Bledsoe lasted three unspectacular seasons in Buffalo ... ."

In his first year in Buffalo (2002), Bledsoe had a fantastic season, one of the best of his career (throwing for nearly 4,400 yards and 24 TDs), and went to the Pro Bowl.

Bledsoe in his prime and at his best was a superb quarterback. Tom Brady's accomplishments do not detract from that.

Re: Peter King:Three bold decisions by Robert Kraft transformed the Patriots

That is when the magazine will hit the newstands

No. The date on most weekly or monthly magazines is the date after which a newstand owner needs to *remove* them from display as a new issue will be out. So the February 13th issue will likely have the Super Bowl results the day after the game.
