Thank You Amendola

Is there a need to cut him now? If we need the cap room to sign someone then sure, but doesn't it make sense to keep him in pre-season to guard against injuries?

I hope he stays as the number 5. He's turning 32 and slowing down, but still a highly capable clutch guy to have for depth, and for 3rd/4th down of course.

Don't think Cooks signing will affect a potential cheap contract for Dola a lot.

By all accounts he is open to a restructured contract and wants to stay. Injuries can happen at any point in preseason/camp mode so why not shell out a bit of money ? Unless another team wants to bring him in -- which at that age and production over the last few years is questionable -- there is no reason to just cut him go right now.

I think we should put him on the trade block for a 6th/7th as a thankyou and make another team pay his cap hit. I think we move on with the 1.4m dead money and free up 6.45m

If he wants to resign <2m then so be it also. Cool with that depth.

It's been fun having Amendola around. He's a recursive Kirk Gibson. He breaks down, enjoys a few months' dalliance with his actress friends, then drops out of the sky to make a couple of absolutely critical plays. You wish it could go on like this forever, but it can't, which is a little saddening for us romantic types.

With the addition of Cooks, I can't see how the Pats keep Amendola at all. They have Edelman, Cooks, Mitchell, and Hogan ahead of him. Not to mention Gronkowski, Allen, White, and Lewis.

I can't see the Pats keeping Amendola when they can free up 6.4M by cutting him outright..

And yes.. I don't care for this deal because I feel the Pats gave up too much and I feel that having Cooks will cut into Mitchell's development since they have Hogan as well.

So, too many Cooks spoil the Amendola? Could be.

Because you don't pay your #5 WR $6M to sit on the bench. You don't pay him $2.5M to sit on the bench. You pay a rookie a few hundred K to sit on the bench and learn and develop..
He returned more punts and kicks than anyone else last year.

Cooks and Hogan are both insurance policies for Edelman.
Neither of them play the same position as Edelman. This isn't Madden.

Oh, you run the team now?

I view it more as complimentary as all have different skill sets.. Cooks is an extraordinary talent and had a great run in NOLA, he will be our deep threat.. On deep balls in 2016, Cooks had 11 catches and no drops, best ratio of any NFC receiver.

Mitchell, Amendola, Edelman, Hogan and Cooks an embarrassment of riches.. throw in those other guys Gronk, Allen, Lewis and White and that is a crap load of "O" talent.. imagine what is going through the heads of the D coordinators in Buffalo, Miami and NYJ??

And if Amendola is gone, so be it, but my prediction is that will renegotiate and the Pats will keep all of them.. this is a nice problem.

I started a Thread as soon as Pats won SB 51 to give some luv to A.D. Whether he's missing during a season from less playing time or injuries etc, one thing I can always be sure of is he will show up in crucial, critical downs whether it's a huge 3rd down or moving chains, clutch catch and TDs and even a possible season ending 2 PT Conversion in Super Bowl No Less as well as being a Team Guy redoing his contract.

You can't teach this. Either you have it or you don't. When spotlight is on you and it's time to come through 'Dola did/can. If he isn't in BB's plans going forward I for one appreciated his time here.

Because he represents $1.4m in dead money there is a 50/50 chance he returns. My guess is he needs to accept a deal for around $2-$2.5m to stay. He's the ultimate backup at WR and ST. That might justify the $2m.

Cooks is a great signing. After 2017 DA and JE will be FAs. Cooks, Hogan and MM represent the future. Better to be a year early with these things.

Trade DA to a crap team that BB has a relationship with....ask for a conditional 7th that never vests.
....then...
If NE ever runs low on WRs during the year....trade for DA using a low pick.

The question is...Which team will be our farm team?
Cleveland? Soon to be our *****?
The Saints? They hate Goodell as much as NE does....Stick it to the man!!

BB is Marco Ramius:

"Goodell's (Moscow's) not the worry, neither is the Full 31 (whole Soviet navy). I know their tactics, I have the advantage. The worry is the coaches (Americans). If we meet the right sort, then this will work. We get some... buckaroo...?"

"Patriots (Comrades), our own division (fleet) doesn't know our full potential. They will do everything possible to test us; but they will only test their own embarassment. We will leave our division (fleet) behind, we will pass through the Goodell's (American) patrols, past their league inspections (sonar nets), and lay off their largest city, and listen to their cowardly talk radio (rock and roll)... while we conduct an air campaign (missile drills). Then, and when we are finished, the only sound they will hear is our laughter, while we sail to Boston (Havana), where the duck boat (sun )is warm, and so is the comradeship. A great day, comrades. We sail into history."

The Pats are planning on going to the SB. Amendola is the kind of player you want around when that is your focus. Team first, no complaint guy - helps new guys understand the team culture. Has multiple roles. There is no question of Amendola restructuring - he wants to stay and knows the facts. And he is not leaving because of a disagreement over a few hundred thousand dollars. I think this is DA's last year in NE (and maybe his last year period), but I think he will be back.

As with any WR, Cooks has yet to prove he can be on the same page as Brady. I like the signing, but assuming Dola will get cut is premature IMO.

Have you considered expressing opinions and predictions as things you believe are probable instead of using such an authoritative tone? Such an approach will likely lead to more congenial responses and less negative ratings thrown back and forth.

Also, throwing a dislike @karguy85 seems a little harsh. He was adding some much needed levity to the thread.

I'm in favor of keeping Danny at almost any price. How much cap room is a Super Bowl worth to you? Because without Danny, we don't win either of the last 2.

I've no idea what the Patriots are going to do with Amendola but going to him on the crucial 2 point conversion said much to me about what the Patriots think of his hands.

How am I wrong about his contract? It's straight from @Miguel's page.

Cutting him saves $6.4M. Don't like the numbers? Take it up with Miguel..
Because it's not guaranteed money and Amendola already has demonstrated willingness to negotiate down, both last year and the year before. He probably can be signed for around $2 million this year.

He will renegotiate and resign. He has 1.4million in dead cap so keeping him for 2 makes sense. Maybe jones isnt ready to return punts yet.

The guy is clutch as they come. The fact the pats went to him on crucial 4th down and 2 point conversion speaks volumes. And having a 5th wr who can do that on the cheap is priceless
