Tee Higgins tagged (was “Another one bites the dust” - Update: Re-signed with Bengals)

Was it exclusive?

If not we can still negotiate with him

Might be worth two 1's if the Bengals take 26 and 27 firsts... Pretty sure we will be middle of the pack, won't have to give up a top ten

Meanwhile, left tackle Orlando Brown is only due to make $7.5M this season because the cash flow on his contract was so front-loaded. How long until the guy that forced his way out of both Baltimore and Kansas City starts making some noise again and gives the Bengals another guy to worry about?

Nah. Bengals just created a mess. They’ll remove the tag if he doesn’t cooperate with teams that try to trade for him.

Bengals can’t trade him unless he signs the tag.
It sounds like Higgins has most of the cards. He can wait awhile to see if CIN is negotiating reasonably with other teams, and if not, make the choice of signing the tag or waiting until the team drops the tag.

Alternatively, he can sign the tag and get a nice 2025 payday. If CIN tries to trade him somewhere that he doesn't want go, he can make that clear to one and all. No one will trade for Higgins for one year at the franchise tag price if he doesn't want to play there.

My feeling is the best choice is to sign the tag early. CIN will then have that money tied up and be under considerable pressure.

The money is tied up whether he signs the tag or not.

I think this should be resolved prior to free agency starting, Patriots or insert team here trade for his rights, or Cincy signs him and Chase long term, but Chase will get his deal first. This feels like Cincy tagging in bad faith to steal a pick.

If he doesn't sign, the ball is in CIN's court. They can drop the tag at any time.

Lance Zeurlien (sp?) made some comments about this season being the year you buy a new washing machine, not a sports car.

I know our fan base is all jazzed up to get a new sports car, but it really feels this isn't the year to do it.

... but... he would want that lol

All the more reason for Higgins to sign the tag and put Cincy's feet in the fire. The team's position is not strong

I wonder if the league would come to this conclusion and collude to not make the trade?

I don't think it was the best look when we did it to Cassell. And also remembering from that trade Cincy will have to be cap compliant including the tag dollars at the start of the league year before they can trade him. They can negotiate and have it ready to go like we did but they can't just trade his rights in the off-season it has to be done after the start of the league year. So that gives leverage to the would be suitors.

They need to get this done now an then go heavy on D in the draft.

They can easily take out KC if they could get a competent D in place.
Easily? It'll take more than a middling D.
