TE Steve Maneri released; DT Joe Vellano signed to 53-man roster

Unless it's a hedge against Jones not playing, Vellano figures to be active. Maneri , not so. So who sits instead?

I guess there's a chance that he won't be active, and he's just being rewarded over Manieri with a playoff-share check.

It was so horrible. Kid brought his fam and all. Alex Silvestro was brought on and hardly used on special teams during the super bowl. I don't do that to people and expect to win in life. It was wrong.

Being signed in November guarantees a roster spot for the SB? Underwood was a fringe, unneeded player who was already cut by the Pats twice before that and going to be inactive anyway. Silvestro was active. It's the NFL, not everyone participates children's soccer.

I don't think he'll be active unless Chris Jones can't go.

The roster spot he took was inactive last week (Maneri) in addition to Flemings spot.

For Vellano to be active (as we're all assuming Fleming WILL also be active) it takes more than just Maneri's 53 man roster spot.

And unless he's truly hurt we shouldn't expect to NOT see a 1-2 punch of Blount and Gray against a soft Indy DL, meaning a 3rd player from last weeks 46 man roster will need to be swapped.

One is already known, Stork is out, assume Fleming replaces him.

Leaves a potential Jones downgrade to make sense of Vellano, who for Gray?

I think Vellano is a case of knowing for a fact that Maneri WON'T be used versus the potential that Vellano MAY be used.

I think Deus and jmt57 have the right read on this. Not so much who's out but instead a good sign that Fleming is a go. Hope so anyway. They tried Cannon in that role and the results were no where near the same. I think it was after that Indy game and his extensive work (30+ snaps) that he came up lame.

He was a force in that game. Sometimes we go with 4 lineman, sometimes 6. No telling what the mad scientist Belichick will concoct this week.

So you're hypothesizing game-time decision on Jones, Vellano on the roster just in case the result of the game-time decision is "inactive"?

That makes a certain sense.

I don't see any risk in Vellano playing. He isn't a massive downgrade from Chris Jones and he is most likely fresher than anyone else on the field.

That sounded sarcastic but also serious, bravo!

You're buying the "evil Bill!" media nonsense. Tiquan was superfluous - he would have been inactive if he hadn't been released - and Silvestro replaced Gronk's special teams snaps. It was exactly the same back end transaction the team had made all season.
