Several people have mentioned that one of our techniques is to stockpile picks into the next draft. Frequently you recieve a decent value benefit for that.
Just wanted to point out that as of now we probably will have 11 picks in 2007. Our FA losses will probably get us 4 extra picks.
In fact if 2007 is currently judged to be weaker than this years class we may trade out of 2007 and into 2006.

Bill Belichick is a brilliant man able to do many mind-boggling things, but going back into the past is something I'm pretty sure he can't do.

Im pretty sure what jct means is that BB may trade next years picks for ones in this years draft.

However, I think common practice is to add a rounds worth of value to the pick in the later draft - so getting an extra 2nd rounder this year would cost us next years 1st rounder.

If we obtain more picks in next years draft it gives us a better chance at Adrian Peterson.

AP and the Puz in the same draft....

*drools*

I know I am going to get hammered for saying this...IMO FA to date has been less than spectacular, we need to use at least ALL our 2006, unless 2007 is judged to be a better draft class. To me, I want us to do everything we can to win THIS YEAR. I am not a Fan of pushing draft picks or cap space to the future at this point.

Of all the great things about Belioli, possible the greatest is the little deals they make on draft day especially the second day. When you combine what they did last year it was really impressive and we're reaping the benefits now - or we will on the 29th and 30th anyway. As jct says, we'll already get comp picks - and pretty good ones, so it will be interesting to see how they play it. I'm sure they have a plan

You don't want them all making the team, we have 5 or so picks in the 6th and 7th round. I do expect us to use, not trade, more of our picks through rounds 4 or 5 but more of the holes will have been filled by then except we can draft a PK and #3 QB assuming Cassel is gonna be #2 (not signing a vet). The tradeable 6s and 7s you should see some movement.

You are correct. I do want us to move around in rounds 1-4 to pick our type guys and using the tradeable 5,6,7 can help. (I didn't say to draft 11 guys we could draft 8 but use the 11 picks this year or even 2 from next year and still have 9 picks next year).

Good call Rook. Plus there are others that will be juniors that might declare such as Marshawn Lynch, Dwayne Jarrett, or Calvin Johnson. I have no reason to believe that any of those guys will be there at 32, which is where we will be picking. I would not mind a move to acquire us an extra 2nd next year and make a run at one of these guys. DeAngelo Williams this year? Adrian Peterson next? Chad Jackson this year? Calvin Johnson next? It only makes sense to try to get some ammo for next year. Of course we will still be able to improve this team, but it is close already.

While the Patriots do always like to stockpile picks, last year was unusually dramatic -- they systematically traded out of 2005 to 2006. Plus they used a couple of 2005 picks in trades for players, which they haven't done this year. To me, that supports the general consensus that the 2006 draft class is much stronger and deeper. Unless somebody overwhelms you with an offer for 2007, I'd say use the ammo you've gathered to maximize this draft, as you're well-positioned to do.

I agree. They have 11 picks. Two can't be traded (kicker). So, if they use 7 of the 9 other picks by trading into the 2nd or 3rd round they could come out with a very good draft class.

I still think that they trade down in the first rd and add another 2nd or 3rd rd pick. If the Pats do get four or at least three comp picks next year, you have to remember that they can not be traded, so with just the comp picks the Pats would have 10 or 11 picks next year too. So I doubt that they would trade out of this draft to stockpile even more picks next year. For some reason I keep eyeing the first two picks in the third rd that the Texans hold, I could see BB trying to move up to that spot. Unlike the Texans, not many 6th or 7th rd picks are going to make the Pats team, so trading say Oakland's 3rd rd pick and a 6th to move up five spots in the thrid rd is something I could see them doing.

The idea is not to push draft choices forward forever. I agree that this is the year to use the choices. We'll have plenty next year.

We have a chance to bring in six reasonable players early (presuming trading away the 5th, 6th and 7th) and still have a couple of 6th's to take flyers on a kicker and a kick returner or even a QB.

I have strong feelings about positions, but not players. We need a LB, an elephant back, a backup NT, a TE, a RB, and a WR. I think we're signing whatever free agent defensive backs we need.
