Just an FYI on the unemployment topic....

The government published "Official" unemployment number is not accurate, and doesn't pretend to be. It deliberately ignores a huge chunk of the potential workforce in its calculations, and it does this every time. Of all sources, the NYT wrote on this recently:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/07/business/economy/07econ.html?_r=2&th&emc=th

Now, the broader measure is nothing new or Earth-shattering, even though most people don't think about it when they hear the "official" unemployment numbers. I just find it interesting that the NYT would have written about it.

I have no problem with it considering that here in Middletown RI they are paving over perfectly fine streets with a fresh layer valuable-as-gold asphalt. It is money that goes straight to the mafia; what a way to stimulate an economy!

What's the trickle down from that? Pinky rings and caddies (actually the new Mafia Staff car in Rhode Island is the Jaguar).

Kraft doesn't own Route 1.

The state, or Fed money when they can get it, is responsible for road and pedestrian access infrastructure, no? You can't walk across route 1, so what would you all suggest for a site for a pedestrian walkway.

The Kraft Group, which referred questions to the state, has long-range plans to develop property across the street from the stadium into an office park that could house close to 1 million square feet. They have no tenant lined up, but the location is one of a handful of spots in Massachusetts large enough to lure a headquarters or research campus for a major corporation, said Greg Bialecki, the state’s secretary of housing and economic development. He also pointed out that the bridge will provide access between two public sidewalks...

In response to written questions, state transportation spokesman Colin Durrant said a 1.5 million square-foot office park could create 4,000 construction jobs and 4,500 office jobs...

The Kraft Group included the bridge in its application for the office park to meet requirements for pedestrian access. Bialecki said he also believes the bridge would be an important factor in attracting a perspective tenant, because it would link the barren west side of the highway with the stores and other amenities at Patriot Place...
