That’s interesting because he and Brooks (whose entire 2019 salary is guaranteed) played the same position on the punt team last season, the far left end of the line. I wonder if they want to get two actual coverage guys on the ends, moving one over to replace the Hogan/Burkhead combo on the right side.

Better make room for banner #7

Let’s gooooo

King has been damn good at his job since he's been here. Another good signing move by the Pats!

I never thought he and Brooks were competing for one spot. King is just too good to cut.

Me neither. I get how each role on the coverage team is different but if you can run down the field 100pmh, beat blocks and tackle well you will have a role.

Is there another NFL HC out there that places such importance on STs like BB?

From day 1 BB had starters playing on the 3rd phase of the game.

I think BAL does. With Harbaugh d-bag being an ex-ST coordinator they are pretty much in the top 10 in DVOA every year

There should be a few more extensions in May and June.

Considering that Bolden played on both the left and right end of the punt coverage unit at different times, I'd say that it's the Patriots ensuring they have coverage for injuries..

Obviously special teams is important, but i feel like with the way kickoff rules continue to change it would translate to less specialists. i still think it makes the most sense to just have your kicker boot it to the back of the end zone every single time and dont ever give them a chance to kill you with a return

I guess they'll always have a role as long as Punting still exists

Bolden should come back on the opposite side..

Watching ST closely over the last few years never managed to understand the obsession of Pats w King. He is a nice guy, relatively dependable core STer . not as impactful as his status would suggest though despite decent amount of “stats“. When he was injured it was not noticeable absence like with Ebner, Slater and last yr when Bolden was gone..

Id prefer bringing back McClellan who was #1 beast last yr and really turned the suffering units around + he can actually play some D.

oh well..

Yeah, I was going to say, it's not really the kickoffs as it is the punts. Several years ago, Belichick have a 10 minute answer to someone on the importance of punt gunners, and since I heard that, and have been aware enough to look for it - I'm not sure he's wrong. Maybe it's not a lockdown corner, or 3rd down clutch receiver important, but maybe it is. Field position really dictates so much more than we all realize.

For Belichick, locking down top special teamers is more important than most backup positions.

We now have some continuity with Bolden, King and Brooks signed through 2020. Slater and Ebner are in their contract year, and rumors of retirement will likely continue.

King is a crucial STer and a break-the-glass emergency backup Brandon. But even with him and Bolden, I still think we need at least one more Brand(o/e/i)n in camp.

King is a core special teamer, in the past 4 years he has played 1307 ST snaps and is second only to Nate Ebner's 1420 snaps..

Slater is going into his 12th season here, so he may be nearing the end.. system continuity is essential.

I thought B. King is the raiders punter
