Somewhat OT - Ed Reed?

Ed Reed just got fired from the Bills along with 14 other Bills assistants. So I have to wonder if Ed is serious enough about an NFL coaching career to want to put in the work to become more than just a "former player" coach, and come here and be taught by the best "coach teacher" in NFL history.

Reed might be the best FS in league history, and would have a lot to offer an already good, but young secondary. I image watching film with Ed and looking through his eyes on what is happening in front of you HAS to be valuable......and I'd hate to see him go back to Baltimore.

He always looked like a goofball every time I would briefly see him during a telecast... more friend and one of the guys (joking, laughing, woofing) than coach... more so than what you generally see in the Pats sideline. But this obviously is a view from waaay agar. I don't even know what he coached. Was he the secondary coach? Safeties?

Very interesting point. For a lot of NFL coaches, I'd imagine rising up the ranks is pretty much their only shot at lucrative money given their skillsets. Ed is set for life and could get a lot of high paying jobs just for being who he is. Unless coaching is his dream, paying his dues seems like a waste of time.

How would he feel about coming in as Steve Belichicks assistant though?

To be honest the Pats safeties are strong point back there and whether it be Steve or just the talent I'd rather just leave things alone for now unless they would both be good working together. Who knows? Maybe a promotion for Steve to another coaching position to get another level of coaching down.

Too soon for Steve Belichick to move to another position. I think BB generally keeps the rotation periods to around 3 years. ED Reed has already put in a few years work prior to going to Buffalo. So, he is journeying through the ranks.
My personal opinion is that a Rex Ryan/Harbaugh protege with Ravens purple blood in his heart would never be comfortable with the Patriot way of thinking.

Ed Reed has long since past the need for caring about how much he is being paid. There is no question he could probably make more as an analyst and be a good one. But instead he chose to be an assistant to the assistant in freakin' Buffalo last season, so there must be at least some interest in pursuing coaching as a future career, and to do so means he has to pay his dues.

It wasn't a HOFer because he was a super athlete. He was a HOFer because he had an extraordinary football IQ. And if he has an interest in staying in football as a coach, he has a lot to offer in passying that along

And there is more to coaching than a high acumen for the game. Quite a bit more, in fact. Just because it's something you would like to see happen doesn't mean it would work for the Patriots. He's largely unproven, and the Pats have someone who has been in the system and has proven he can do the job. Reed can go somewhere else and pass on his HOF knowledge all day long. Just my humble opinion.

Let's not forget that Belichick didn't just coach Defense. He also spent time on the Offense and Special Teams before becoming a Defensive coach. If the Pats lose any staff, there could be an opening for Reed to come in at a different position and for him to learn.. I think that Reed could make an excellent TE or WR coach since he can bring the perspective of just what DBs are looking for when they face off against a Receiver.
