Yeah, I was working under the off chance that Mariota would actually be playing. Either way, I honestly think Humphries already realizes he made a terrible decision.

2018 Edelman, (Gordon), Hogan, Dorsett, Patterson
    2019 Edelman, (Gordon), Dorsett, ???, Harris/Ellington

IMO, if we re-sign or replace Hogan with an equal, we will have the same WR level as in 2018, with perhaps a bit more help in LeCosse at receiving TE.

Yes, we will add a WR or 2 to the 53 man roster. At minimum, we will equal the 2018 WR corps. We have 5 months of free agency, 6-7 months of the trade market and the draft to achieve this 1-2 player addition.

I don't think that we will have a great problem in finding a Hogan or better player. So, I see no reason to panic after one week, and wishing that we had overpaid for Humphries, Tate or Amendola. [EDIT: or overpaid for Patterson]

Pats haters would claim that the Patriots had found a new way to cheat. "Retriever-Gate" scandal hits the internet and twitter as NFL owners petition Goodell to block Pats newest roster move!

Alas, OJ, this sounds like the "all WR's ALL the time" time of year again.

When are you guys going to learn. In every draft there are always a couple of WR's who have the size and skills to be recognizably great. The Beckham, Green, Jones types of guys. The rest are just prospects who have a chance to be either great, good, or mediocre.

Sure you can find great WR's from everywhere in the draft. JE, and AB were 7th and 6th round picks respectively. Baldwin when undreafted. But with the exception of those "elite" prospect, which are out of reach for the Pats, you just have to take your shots and hope for the best.

And while I'm fine with the Pats trading down in the 2nd to #37, I'll be fall off my chair SHOCKED to see a WR come off the board with that pick. (But then again I would have said the same thing if you asked me about a RB at #31 last season. ;) )

There are plenty of WR's with the talent range of Samuel and Hardman that can be had with the first 100 picks, and I fully expect the Pats to use one of those 6 picks to grab one. But not THAT high.

BTW- I believe that Nelson will still be available AFTER the draft, and would love to take an incentive laden deal to chase a ring with the Pats.

On a negative note, the longer it takes for the league to decide about whether Gordon will be allowed to play this year, the worse it will be for the Pats. I think the possibility of Gordon coming back impedes us getting a FA outside WR to come here.

If Gordon IS coming back and can work with the team throughout the off season, then the WR corps can build itself up through the draft and get 2 guys who can be depth pieces while they learn. If not we need at least ONE seasoned Vet to fill that role. Nelson, becing MY first choice.

I remember when people were higher on Watkins, Landry & Cooks than Odell. Man what a class.

Patriots gave better offer to Adam Humphries, and pursued Jared Cook. Both said no.
Tate said he would "love to play for Patriots", yet he went elsewhere.

Some WRs just not interested in going with the Patriots.

Jordy Nelson would be a stop-gap, but I fear he too may not want to be a Patriot.

Which goes back to "Develop WRs via the draft". Patriots has been quite poor in this aspect. Dunno why the Steelers do very well on this subject.

With Gronk retiring and his cap space opening up, is AJ Green in play?

Here's some things we could potentially do...

Try and make a last second run at Jared Cook. He seems like he hasn't signed with NO officially yet.

Trade a 6th or something for John Ross.

Trade a 3rd and change for A.J Green.

Swap of late rounders for Cameron Brate.

Nab one of the Ravens TEs (whichever Bill looks at highly).

    Bears for Trey Burton.

Colts might not be as high on Jack Doyle anymore.

Falcons might be happy to deal Mohamed Sanu.

Trade a 1st and 2nd to move up for TJ Hockenson/Noah Fant (whichever Bill looks at highly).

100% ensure that Josh Gordon will be playing next season (unlikely).

Try and fill up ALL the defensive needs NOW, so we can heavily focus on Offense in the draft (1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd - TE, WR, WR, OL, DL, DL, etc.)

The only issue I see with Cook is that he's still not a solution. Cook is older than Gronk was and in a year or two, we'd still have a TE hole.

I think this is a great moment to trade for big time WR now. The cap space is there now. TE draft is strong so we can double dip there.

I would think we will see a big trade in the upcoming weeks until the draft

    Here's what I would do:

    1. Sign Jordy Nelson
    2. Trade #64 to the NYG for Sterling Shepard and #120 (Giants don't have a pick between 37 and 95)
    3. If Fant falls into the twenties, trade up for him.
    4. Draft a WR in the 3rd.

They would likely look to the draft, as well.
