Smith is a binky, but at the same time I am unimpressed w/ his speed and wish he was a step or 2 quicker. From a TE standpoint who will win? Our college blocker or the Lax player? We have 4 solid TE's and am curious to see who wins and who gets IR'ed by a mystery injury?

Smith is 266 , what do you mean he is not impressive with this speed.Yeatman is actually slower in a straight line ,but is the other things like playing TE that he is better.

My early money is on Yeatmen. I was impressed in Game 1 with his hands. If I remember correctly he made a few nice grabs on bullets thrown by Mallett. We'll see though .. it's still early.

Game 1 definately goes to Yeatman

I'm now officially on the Yeatman bandwagon thanks to Off The Grid. I think he's not only had a better camp, but he's also a better athlete with more upside. Smith looks stiff to me.

Yeatman was much more noticeable in the first exhibition game, in a good way. He looked bigger, stronger and more involved with decent hands and athleticism. Smith seemed to play more passively. It's still early.

If you didn't know where they were drafted, your eyes would tell you Yeatman was the higher pick. Since BB doesn't care where someone was drafted, Yeatman gets the nod.

For sure it will be something to keep an eye on during the game......Yeatman impressed but it was only game one against Jags jags

Looks like Pats will have 3 solid TE's no matter who wins the battle....just hope the mystery IR is used because neither of these guys could probably pass thru waivers onto the PS...

Belichick loves those lacrosse athletes.

I think it's Yeatman's job to lose.

Is Yeatman bigger than Smith? Suprising since i thought he did look faster out there.

agreed in every respect. I just did not notice Smith on the field, sure I saw him, but I wasn't liking what I saw in that sample. To the IR 1 of them?

With Gronk and Hernandez already on the roster, pass catching and a couple tenths of speed in a 3rd TE is purely gravy. Whoever wins out will be 99% because of blocking.

Also, I'm under the impression that Smith has longsnapping skills. It's one of the reasons I was stoked when we took him. If that's true I'd love to see him longsnap in preseason games and practice. Who knows, we may be able to keep both and cut Katula (I have nothing against Katula, I just like more versatile players). Or keep just Smith, cut Katula and leave extra room somewhere else on the roster.

(and ftr I like both Smith and Yeatman)

This........ Pay attention to their blocking in the next couple games, that will tell you who we'll keep. Sure, it's nice to see Yeatmen make a few great plays here and there, but that's not gonna be what wins him a job here. It's in the blocking, and who does a better job of it.

I still think it's Lee's job to lose. Although, I do think Yeatmen has impressed and certainly wouldn't make it through waivers to the PS.

p.s. Smith won't take Katula's spot. They may replace Katula (specially if he botches a few more snaps), but they'll do it with another long-snapper, not a part-time fill-in guy that happen to be able to long snap. Too important of a position.

Both. I don't see why the possibility of carrying 4 TEs is being ignored.

With all the plays with 2 and 3 TEs on the field that they've been running, I would think there's a reasonable chance that they'll have 4 TEs with 3 active on gamedays.

I think it's much more likely than the roster predictions coming out with 7 receivers. Question for those people: Do you dress all 7? If not, who isn't active on gameday?

The long snapper is too situationally important to have an everyday player play there--you don't want to have a random backup longsnapping because Smith or Ninkovich got the wind knocked out of him 10 minutes earlier.

BTW good call on Old Crumply Balls, I know a lot of the board's resident experts gave you grief about it.
