Slater, McCourty Among Those Named as Patriots Captains For 2011
By: Ian Logue

The Patriots named their captains this morning, and there were a couple of names that stood out with the six guys who earned the honor....

Naming Slater as a captain truly IS an excellent story. Here is a guy who has spent his ENTIRE career literally...."on the bubble". There hasn't been a single season where his inclusion on the Pat final roster hasn't been a surprise for many of us. Now the "most expendable man on the roster, has been elevated to Captain (which is NOT just a ceremonial post with the Pats) His HOF father should be VERY proud,

What no Gronkowskis? It must be a misprint.

Brady and Vince are the collective leaders of the offense and defense, who could really (dare) question what they have to say?

Mayo and Mankins are the "muscle"

Slater is quickly becoming one of my favorite players on this team. Funny considering I didn't like him at all his first few years. He just seems to have the right attitude and work ethic to find ways to contribute, even if he can't have a glory position. Looks like his teammates feel this way too.

Slater is the little engine that could.

Add me to the pile, happy to see Slater receive this honor. I have a hunch he has a great work ethic and is a real positive in that lockerroom.

Agreed, his Dad is no doubt very proud...

I have always liked Slater glad to see him get recognized. Oddly enough I have had fun at camp the last few years watching him Gun and Vice.

good on mccourty and slater.

Is Slater strictly a ST captain? ( i would assume).

Just to F with the fanbase Bill should have named Tarpanian an honorary captain...

I think another part of his being such a respected member of the team is his work on scout team throughout the season. He is a very smart kid and they rely on him to imitate stars of the other team. I'm sure he is doing his best RBush imitations this week.

He always seems to be on the bubble with FANS, but I would bet that he isn't even close to being a bubble player with the coaches.

The article makes an interesting point that McCourty is a captain but Chung isn't. We probably shouldn't read into it, but interesting nonetheless.

Great news! Mathew Slater seems to be following in the footsteps of guy named Troy Brown. I know it's wishful thinking, but he seems to be of the same mold.

I kind of suspect that Slater's being "on the bubble" was in fan minds only. Even when he's been injured and had to miss games, they never IRed him because he was too valuable.

Congrats to him, he seems like a guy with a great attitude who keeps working and improving.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to feel about it. It's good to hear that McCourty has the respect of the team, especially as a second year player but what does it say (if it says anything at all. I mean they can't name everyone a captain) about Chungs leadership abilities? I'm a bit worried about the safety position in general. Hopefully Barret will step up and really suprise me.

I don't think it's really that big of a deal. Chung will still be asked to make some defensive calls and organize the secondary, as you really need a safety for that. McCourty's captaincy is just a recognition of the respect he's earned among his teammates. Chung is still a leader on this team.

Everybody deserves a trophy....with juice boxes after the game

It probably has more to do with numbers than anything else.. of you go to Chung, probably should add a Gronkowski and/or a Welker.. there has to be a cut off point.

I used to root for a better player to take Slater off the 53. After this pre-season, no more. Besides his always tough guy gunner play he obviously has worked hard to become a creditable backup WR. Distinctly out played high draft pick bust Tate and won a solid spot. Obviously BB knows what he's doing and I don't.
