Shutting Down the Pass

Interesting detail. In the wins Jones gets fewer catches and yards but more TDs.

Indeed. It's a trend that's been well noted. Julio Jones as Ryan’s first, second, and third receiving option last year. And that over-reliance converted into making costly decisions, especially in the red zone. With key off-season additions and better chemistry between Ryan and Kyle Shanahan, the offense is no longer reliant on a lonw superstar wide receiver getting open. Jones has been held under 40 yards in four games this season. And ironically, the Falcons are undefeated with victories over New Orleans, Denver, Green Bay, and Arizona in those games.

Here are the 2016 regular season splits:

The Falcons record when Julio Jones has > 112 receiving yards : 1-4 (.200)
The Falcons record when Julio Jones has < 40 yards: 4-0 (100.)

It’s a bizarre stat, yet a testament to all the moving parts of their offense.

But if you look at some of his games, Ryan still falls into the habit of leaning too heavily on Julio Jones, who was the intended receiver on all three of his fourth-quarter interceptions this season. That surely ought to factor into the Patriots gameplan.
