Should they try to extend Chandler Jones this offseason?

Perhaps when we have increases in the cap, the prices for DE's and CB's will increase, perhaps in 2016. The cap is where it was in 2009. IMHO, the decreases are functions of teams have increases based on fall hopes of cap increases, and a subsequent recognition of reality.

your right the pats may never have much more if anymore cap money then they have now but IMO if any of the young guys get a new Deal this year it should be Devin McCourty but I guess it cant hurt to lock up your star pass rusher

Which would mean extending now might make sense.

I'm not questioning your premise, Andy, because let's face it--none of us really know the ins/outs of the longer term picture that Belichick likely has in regards to specifics.

I would have to imagine that the odds would be much better next offseason however, although even then one could argue that we have more of an issue with a higher number of free agents to deal with in 2015.

What your are seem to be suggesting is that we extend potential pro-bowlers as soon as we can and take the risk of injury (rather than have the player take the risk). I suppose that is generally a good idea, although it negates the great bargain in the rookie salary. One of the great part of the CBA for the teams is the ability to tie up inexpensive talent for 4 years or 5 years in the case of a first rounder.

This would be an important piece of things to consider in my opinion, along with possibly having higher priorities at the current moment.

Aside from that, I would also have a bit of a difficult time envisioning what would be deemed as fair compensation for the future, after only 2 seasons. Any projections for Chandler Jones' future may be kind of hard to project at this specific moment in time, unless they were hoping that they could stay a step ahead with "cheaper" deals in the same way as the early extensions to the TEs, and perhaps that is what Andy Johnson may be suggesting.

I have a question?

But for the duration of Brady contract, won't the cap hits be in the low teens? Around the $12-14 mil range? Because if so, that's a huge relief paying a franchise QB that money. Considering other qb's are around the $18 plus region.

I would consider Chandler Jones an elite defensive end.

• 79 tackles
• 11.5 sacks
• 80 total QB pressures
• 1 forced fumble
• 1 fumble recovery
• 7 stuffs
• 1 blocked kick

He won defensive player of the month for November.

I would consider him more elite at his position than Aaron Hernandez was after 2011.
I would consider you very wrong. Chandler Jones has DISAPPEARED in December and the playoffs. Through his two seasons, he's played NINE games in December plus four total playoffs games...in those THIRTEEN games Jones has ONE SACK...you want to extend a guy that can't play when it matters, then I'm glad you're not running the team....

I would wait another year or 2, just in case he murders someone (allegedly) or breaks/infects
his forearm multiple times.

I thought that JPP was the best comparable for Chandler coming into the league - they're very similar players, IMO.

I think that his decline in production totally makes sense, though. Back injuries are nothing to mess around with. They're serious business, and he hasn't been the same since his back surgery. The timeline looks like this:

2011: JPP had his breakout year
2012: Started the season out pretty strong: 6.5 sacks through 9 weeks. Then he hurt his back in November. Played through it, but he had to have surgery over the offseason. This explains his lack of production over the final two months of the season, IMO.
2013: Looked like his back was still messed up, plus a shoulder injury for good measure.

Moral of the story: back injuries are no joke and can easily be career killers.

JPP was actually a player I followed closely in 2012 (mainly to compare him to Jones). One mistake I believe the Giants made with him was using him inside far too often, he was matching up with LGs with help from the OC more than half his snaps in the games I watched, that type of abuse was probably too much for his body.

Which is why as much as I like what Chandler Jones can do on the inside I would prefer to see someone like Armstead emerge in that DT role.

He's about average right now with a meh type of year to me, plenty of room to grow .He needs to start making play against elite quarterbacks in critical games.

You're a pretty harsh grader if you think that Jones was "meh" this year. If he's meh, then how many DEs in the league are actually any good? 10? If you compare his career trajectory to the other pass rushers who are at the top of the league right now, he compares very favorably to most of them. Von Miller/Aldon Smith/JJ Watt types the exception, not the rule. I hoped Chandler would put himself up in that category with an elite second season, and I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't, but he wasn't that far off, either. It's hard to call his season a disappointment.

Here's a list of elite pass rushers, followed by how many years they'd been in the league before they posted a season that was comparable to Jones' second season this year:

Chris Long: fourth year (2011)
Michael Johnson: fourth year (2012)
Justin Houston: second year (2012)
Anthony Spencer: sixth year (2012)
Trent Cole: third year (2007)
Mario Williams: second year (2007)
Jared Allen: second year (2005)
Tamba Hali: fifth year (2010)
Greg Hardy: third year (2012)
Clay Matthews: second year (2012)
Robert Mathis: second year (2004)
Robert Quinn: second year (2012)

Not a comprehensive list, by any means, but it proves the point. Chandler Jones' production over his first two seasons is comparable to most of the very best pass rushers in the league. If he was 'meh', then you must have thought that Robert Quinn, Jared Allen, Clay Matthews, Mario Williams, Robert Mathis, and Justin Houston were meh after their second years too. And you must have considered Tamba Hali, Greg Hardy, Chris Long, Michael Johnson, and Trent Cole to be pretty bad after theirs.

Just a reminder: Jones cannot be extended this offseason, period. The real question is whether he should be extended after next season, given that the Pats can control his rights through 2016.

Yes, it's 14.8m this year. It goes down to 13m next year, and then back up to 14m for 2016.

While that's great in terms of cap hits compared to many other franchise QBs, you also have to keep in mind that there are some teams who have franchise QBs/WRs/DBs/DEs who are getting paid peanuts on their rookie deals.

It's great when compared to many other franchise QBs though, so your point is obviously quite valid. I think sometimes a bit too much is made of it though, although you'd think that we'd be able to have one more solid player to equal that 20m cap figure. Of course when injuries hit and guys don't pan out as well as you'd hope, things tend to even out.

Perhaps we end up "ahead" once and for all, once we're done with the dead cap hits that have been hanging around lately (Hernandez this year 7.5m), as we move into next season's 2015 year. By that time, there should also be guys like Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Demarius Thomas, Richard Sherman, etc who are costing their teams bigger money. Of course the offset to that is that they'll be "new" rookie players who step into the cheap rookie deals of the players I just named to take their places. Hopefully one or two of those guys can be playing for the N.England Patriots!
