Should the Pats look at extending Jamie Collins now?

I'd work on extending him as soon as the season is over. He has quickly become one of the very best LB's in the NFL and is no longer the liability against the run that he once was. He impacts almost every play in some form or fashion.

Restricted FA after next season. If a deal isn't worked out by then I think BB will place a 1st round tender ($2.8m salary for the year if he signs it) on him. Meaning for a team to sign him they'd have to give up their 1st round pick.

I hope not, ANY team would gladly give up a 1st round pick for Collins. If other teams knew how he'd turn out he'd go top 5 in the draft.

Don't sleep on Hightower either his size poses a problems for O-Linmen and RB's try picking him up on blitz no thanks.

No question the team loves Hi. OK'ing the $7m 5th year option signifies this. He is very important to this defense.

Stepping into the "Way-Back Machine" for a moment, the Patriots signed two linebackers to long term extensions the same year (1984?). One was Andre Tippett and the other was a guy named Don Blackmon. For those of us who remember him, he was a sideline to sideline guy, played mostly opposite Andre on the edge but would blitz up the middle as well/ He played ok in coverage and was good vs the run. A neck injury shortened his career. He should have been a Pro Bowler a couple of times but was obviously overshadowed by Andre.

Pats have that same kind of dynamic going with these two.

That 85 Linebacker Core was awesome! Don Blackmon,Andre Tippett, Larry McGrew, Johnny Rembert,Steve Nelson,Ed Reynolds,Ed Williams.

That post was about Butler, I believe.

Ed Williams was a total freaking enigma. Ton of talent and did a good job when Blackmon hurt his neck but the next year I don't think he made the team was of out of football for a bit then came back.

If he had 2% of the desire Clayton Weishuhn did he would have been a Pro Bowler.

Not a knock but remember when many thought Jerod Mayo was the best thing since slice bread as a LB around here? Yeah he has had some injuries but even when he was good he was nooo waaay in the class of Collins even Hightower good. Jamie Collins is one of those guys BB will pay he knows LB's like Collins dont fall off trees.

Completely disagree... Mayo was a perennial pro-bowler and lead the NFL in tackles nearly every single year for years and years... How quickly people forget about a player the second they get injured and aren't performing in the now anymore.

Mayo has been tremendous to this franchise and should be talked about with a high level of respect.

Butler, as an UDFA, can be extended after this season. UDFAs can be extended after two seasons. Drafted players can be extended after 3 seasons

There is no way Belichick lets Collins test free agency. A deal will get done sooner than later.

Belichick does extensions with the first year or two basically matching the end of the rookie contract. That can be a dealbreaker for some players, so start the negotiations early to avoid another Logan Mankins situation. The lack 0f contracts running out next year and the mandatory 1st round vacation gives the team some options for whatever moves they want to make.

can't lose collins.....i think they will pay him....he deserves it

Collins = LT
Gronk = Bavaro

Bb might be tempted to coach till 70

I think Collins our best player to resign, but knowing Belichick I get this feeling that Hightower is priority number one, then Collins.

He's a complete do it all football player

Collins is the Troy Polamalu of our defense.

He's literally all over the place. He's the guy we go to when we need a big play.

He can blitz, cover, tackle, and he's a game changer on D. Someone the offense always has to game plan for.

I tend to agree, but who knows? They're both high quality players who show versatility and athleticism. It's hard to try and project which one will get done, or if there's any type of priority list.

I used to think that C.Jones was the odd man out, and I still do to some degree, but he's making things much more interesting with his play so far this year. I'd like to think they could keep all 3, but that will be difficult.

Let's hope they get started during the offseason, and then have the capacity to continue negotiations with 1-2 throughout the season, with the possibility of a spring 2017 franchise tag.
