Just wondering if anyone thinks now, or this offseason, would be a good time to talk long-term extension with Jamie Collins.

In 2011 after their SB loss, the Patriots extended both Gronkowski and Hernandez long-term, despite both players having just two years of service and more than a year remaining on their current contracts. The Gronkowski extension had proven to be a great call (although there were certainly times when it appeared injuries would derail it); the Hernandez extension proved to be a disaster. There is a high degree of risk:reward in doing something like this.

In my opinion, if they think Collins is good off the field, they might want to consider locking him up long-term. With Gronkowski, they extended him all the way through 2019, realizing he was going to be THAT piece of their offense and saving a lot of money in the long-run. They knew he would be worth much more on the market as a free agent and also realized that players will often take an opportunity to be financially set for life if it's available, since it eliminates their injury risk.

I think Collins is, or will be, the Gronkowski of the defense. Although his stats aren't always eye-popping, it is clear he is the Queen on their chessboard, an absolute wild card who can do everything well. He can stop the run; he can be a top pass rusher from the edge or up the middle; he can cover tight ends; he can contain the QB. Collins, in my opinion, is one of the top-10 defenders in the NFL right now and continues to get better.

When I went to the San Diego game last year, two things stood out to me. First, Gronkowski didn't look like he belonged on the same field, since physically he overmatched everyone out there. Second, Collins was absolutely as dominating as Gronkowski on the other side of the field; you knew where he was all the time, on every play, because he just stood out with incredible athleticism, speed, and power. I think Collins has a similar "freak of nature, once in a generation" value as Gronkowski. I wonder if the FO will think about giving him an early extension to make him the anchor of this defense for years to come.

As soon as possible anyways.

I'd hate to see the Pats get into a bidding war with other teams. Highly likely he may be one of the premier free agents when his contract is up.

I think we should be working on extensions with Collins & Hightower..

But yes Jaime Collins is our best player on defense. Would be a shame to loose him.

Well if it gets to that point they'll surely franchise him and try to work out a deal.

Definitely as soon as we can but we have him next year and can Franchise him the year after. We could even Franchise him a second time if we wanted (although it would get a little pricey). So we aren't in a position to lose him for a while.

Only way Collins leaves Foxboro is if he is not happy here personally or his agent is a complete ass.

I'm pretty sure they are already throwing around numbers and will look to do something over the summer.

He is priority #1. Hi #2 and Chandler Jones is #3

It would be awesome if they could somehow keep Collins, Hightower and Jones but its going to be hard to keep two of those guys

To answer you question directly- yes. I don't think there is any reason to let Collins hit FA. The question is does 'The Freak" want to roll the dice and become a FA.

The Gonk and AH extensions were smart business. Clearly the Pats didn't have enough info on AH otherwise they would not have cut that deal.

One way or another, I don't think the Pats let Collins get to FA. They'll either extend him after this season or franchise him after next season. I think they'll try to extend him and Hightower after this season. That way, as long as they get one signed they can tag the other.

We're definitely not allowed to extend him until next year, but he can't hit FA. Please no.

Not a knock but remember when many thought Jerod Mayo was the best thing since slice bread as a LB around here? Yeah he has had some injuries but even when he was good he was nooo waaay in the class of Collins even Hightower good. Jamie Collins is one of those guys BB will pay he knows LB's like Collins dont fall off trees.

Where does Malcolm Butler fit into all of this? How long is he under contract and when is he eligible for an extension?

Don't sleep on Hightower either his size poses a problems for O-Linmen and RB's try picking him up on blitz no thanks.

I'm not worried about it. He will be a Patriot for a long time.

Restricted FA after next season. If a deal isn't worked out by then I think BB will place a 1st round tender ($2.8m salary for the year if he signs it) on him. Meaning for a team to sign him they'd have to give up their 1st round pick.

There is no doubt the Pats will try to lock him up early. They may or may not succeed.

I think the same is true of Jones and Hightower.

I agree with the thoughts in this thread that they're likely to succeed with Collins and Hightower.

It's less clear that they'll bid enough to keep Jones. But frankly, I'm a little more optimistic than I would be if his brothers weren't having various difficulties. I don't think he'll get super-****y about utterly maximizing his value ...

I think Butler is somebody who'll give enough of a discount for them to lock him up too when the time comes.

Based on BB's comments from yesterday :re Malcolm, that is all but guaranteed.

Based on his level of improvement, the team might try to be a little proactive to lock him into a longer term deal.

Yes and he is the most important player to lock up. I'd be pretty stunned and extremely disappointed if he isn't a Patriot for the foreseeable future. I don't think the Pats have any intention of letting that happen either.
