If a deal isn't worked out by then I think BB will place a 1st round tender ($2.8m salary for the year if he signs it) on him. Meaning for a team to sign him they'd have to give up their 1st round pick.
Don't sleep on Hightower either his size poses a problems for O-Linmen and RB's try picking him up on blitz no thanks.
No question the team loves Hi. OK'ing the $7m 5th year option signifies this. He is very important to this defense.
Stepping into the "Way-Back Machine" for a moment, the Patriots signed two linebackers to long term extensions the same year (1984?). One was Andre Tippett and the other was a guy named Don Blackmon. For those of us who remember him, he was a sideline to sideline guy, played mostly opposite Andre on the edge but would blitz up the middle as well/ He played ok in coverage and was good vs the run. A neck injury shortened his career. He should have been a Pro Bowler a couple of times but was obviously overshadowed by Andre.
Pats have that same kind of dynamic going with these two.
I hope not, ANY team would gladly give up a 1st round pick for Collins. If other teams knew how he'd turn out he'd go top 5 in the draft.
That post was about Butler, I believe.
I re-read the original post and you are correct.
That 85 Linebacker Core was awesome! Don Blackmon,Andre Tippett, Larry McGrew, Johnny Rembert,Steve Nelson,Ed Reynolds,Ed Williams.
Not a knock but remember when many thought Jerod Mayo was the best thing since slice bread as a LB around here? Yeah he has had some injuries but even when he was good he was nooo waaay in the class of Collins even Hightower good. Jamie Collins is one of those guys BB will pay he knows LB's like Collins dont fall off trees.
I think Collins our best player to resign, but knowing Belichick I get this feeling that Hightower is priority number one, then Collins.
