Semi-OT: One less veteran QB in the mix, as Alex Smith retires

Certainly not a 1st overall pick-worthy career but a very solid one nonetheless.

Impressed with his perseverance and how he dealt with adversity.

Considering he made $189m over his career he did just fine.

Hypothetical situation: Pats trade up to number 4 with the Falcons and the QB they draft there turns out to be the equivalent of Alex Smith. Do you consider that a win?

I think Bill could do a lot with an Alex Smith type... but...

...it's not a blowout.

Yeah, it's one of those things where I think he could win with a good team... but to move up to 4 you're also giving up future firsts, so your ability to maintain a good team is hampered a bit. You're certainly not keeping a stacked roster once that rookie earns his second contract. It's a tough call.

Wich has nothing to do with the Pats.

How the QB's end up distributed will be a factor in the draft strategies for teams that need a QB. For example, Matt Ryan signing with Atlanta is the most frequently cited factor in prognostications about how they are likely to use the #4 pick.

It's one big QB ecosystem that the Pats are part of.

Another proof point that despite BSPN brain washing, draft position means nothing the day after the draft.

If it did, #1 Alex Smith would have had a better career than #24 Aaron Rodgers.

Totally hypothetical.

BB will look at the price to trade up to #4 and decide the best way to build the team is to use the draft picks or trade down for more.

BB thinks he can find Alex Smith or better in the 2nd or 3rd round.

The reality was Smith wasn't even picked at #4, he was picked at #1, which would have taken even more draft capital to obtain, with the same results.

The hypothetical may apply to Ryan Pace, but it doesn't to BB.

And, @Sliplady, you are part of one big global ecosystem of humanity that constructs how you think and the choices you make in life. Independence and liberty are simply illusions that it allows you to have.

One other classy thing about Alex: how he mentored his KC replacement.
