Wheatly started before getting hurt; and Willhite started later, over O'Neal, Webster and Lew Sanders. Both appear to have futures in the NFL. So the draftnik's opinon was pure bovine excrement.:snob:

So, I provided proof of how rankings can be wrong, and how the Pats will not adhere to them when seeking players who fit. Wheatley was the prime example last draft, and Burnett (or someone else) will be another example this draft. Therefore, Mayoclinic or anyone else shouldn't be surprised if the Pats draft someone earlier then their projected rankings.

As AZPatsfan points out later, you can only take the drafts for their information when it comes to ranking players for the Patriots. You can't actually go by the rankings the sites use because the Pats use their own system to rank players.

Surprised you don't think I knew this, because that's the point I was intent on making. Evidently, my post confused yourself and AZ.

Overview

2 year starter for the Utes. All MWC CB in 2008. Has declared for the 2009 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Long arms and strong tall build. At his best in press coverage on the short side of the field where he can be physical and jam his man and not allow a free release. Good ball skills and concentration at the position. Will deliver a blow to the WR.

Weaknesses

Doesn't get out of cuts as quickly as you'd like and may project to safety. Lacks the ideal top end speed. Gets up too high in his back pedal.

You ignore that Hobbs, even with his injuries, had shut Burress down to that point. And you ignore that they wouldn't have even been in that position had Asante Samuel stopped David Tyree on either of the 2 balls thrown at him.

You've obviously never tired playing defensive back in your life if you don't understand the physical mismatch that Hobbs was facing as a 5'9 guy against a superior 6'5 receiver in the red zone. AND finally your claim that Hobbs was the only guy shutting down Burress is likely 90% wrong unless you can prove that you watched EVERY single snap of the defense and Hobbs and ONLY Hobbs was defending Buress every play of the game. I very much doubt that could have happened. Defending a gamebreaker like Buress or TO or Moss is a TEAM effort. You giving Hobbs 100% credit of stopping Burress pror to that play to try to prove your point is 100% erroneous. But it doesn't matter what is said, your homer tinted glasses are burning so brightly you can't even see the simple facts.

On that play the Pats GAMBLED that the blitz would get there in time so that the person who was left isolated, Hobbs, would never have to make the play. The gamble backfired and Hobbs in fact COULDN'T make the play. That's all there is to it. Get over it. When you gamble on defense and lose and expose yourself to a mismatch, touchdowns are scored.

Let's get back to the discussion. Height is not everything in a CB but it certainly doesn't hurt to have height to prevent mismatches on the taller wide receivers that are becoming every more prevalent in the NFL. And lastly the misconception that BB only desires SHORT CBs is just that, a misconception. What he desires are agile, quick twitch guys that can run with wide receivers and are ballhawks. Because of the Pats draft position and needs, BB generally HAD to pick the shorter guys, because those were the only guys remaining that fulfilled his criteria when he was making his picks.

PS Calling Hobbs a serviceable #2 CB but no #1 is not dumping on him, it's merely the truth. Hobbs to this point is a journeyman CB, nothing more. He can't hold Asomugha or Baileys jock, so STOP PRETENDING that he should be mentioned in the same breath!!

Very, very well said. The Ellis Hobbs (and Wheatley & Wilhite) love-fest is unwarrented, to be kind.

Our pass rush sux, but at least there might be an answer from one of our young OLBs. I see no answers forthcoming from our contingent of undertalented, injury-prone midgets at CB.

The play in question. Watch it at normal speed and slow mo. The Giants drew up this play to iso Burress on Hobbs and it worked. The Pats had to line up two guys to the left to account for the Giants' bunched receivers. Additionally the Pats sent blitzers so Hobbs was not going to get help on this play. It's not that the Pats WANTED to leave Hobbs alone, but because of the play called (blitz) and the Giant's offensive formation, they HAD to leave Hobbs alone with Burress. And the results are pretty obvious. The Giants went over the top with the football and Hobbs didn't stand a chance.

This weekend I went to my cousin's kid's bar mitzvah in New Jersey. It was a huge, elaborate affair with a sports-themed reception. At one point the DJ asked everyone to be quiet and pointed up to these giant video screens where a football game suddenly appeared, and it hit me: "oh no, tell me this isn't happening, they're going to show the Tyree catch." I actually walked out of the room.

If I can walk out of a bar mitzvah to avoid reliving that game, can't we avoid rehashing it on every thread of "draft" discussion? Please?

In my mind, it's possible to not be in Asomugha's league, but still good enough to be a #1 CB.

That's certainly true, as was the case when we had Asante Samuel; however, I just don't see Hobbs as a #1 CB. He's a solid player, and I like him; but not a #1 CB to my mind.
