IDK, my guess is they had Wells do this because they represent the NFL in other matters like the concussion lawsuit and wanted to maintain an illusion of independence since Wells does not directly have any business with the NFL.

Michael McCann theorizes that Wells is pissed at the League. McCann believes that Wells never wanted to be characterized as independent because he knew he wasn't and that the League left him out to dry with the Deflategate Report because he gave them what they wanted and they took no culpability. McCann says there is no way Wells would admit that about a client, but he feels that Wells will never want to have anything to do with the League ever again and his firm may not either after they finish the concussion lawsuit.

That was totally set up by the NFL though. They probably pressured him to do that.

Wells is a lawyer. His integrity gets challenged all the time. Every lawyer no matter how ethical gets their character challenged. Wells acted like this was the first time he ever did it. It was clearly a PR stunt by the NFL. I guess he could have said no, but his partners have other litigations going that they are representing the NFL on.

Personally, I've always held them in the highest regard, and would have considered hiring them for highly compensated executive positions prior to Deflategate. I think he didn't sue before because he might have been advised that the case wasn't strong enough, now things have changed and the timing is great for both him and Brady's team because where there's smoke there's fire.

I think CameraPlacementGate is more of the catalyst - that gave every NFL fan and mediot the power to believe anything and everything negative ever said about NE and the legitimacy to spout it as absolute truth. Deflategate is just more fuel for the fire.
