Schefter: Ebron may visit New England

What we should do is run out he price up to where rivals have to over pay. Just offer 65-75 percent of what he’s worth to make other teams pay full price

Dont want to repeat myself... let others do the talking..

I never said Ebron should replace Allen. I said Ebron should replace Hollister and then to save some money you will need to replace Allen with a cheaper blocking TE or just use tackle eligibles when needed.

When did Allen become Hog Hannah?

I'm not against using Allen as blocking TE this year but I'm also not against setting up the depth differently so that it's better equipped to this passing league.

Between TE2 and TE 3 we need blocking and receiving and Hollister and Allen fill the minimum requirements we need but why not try to do better.

FWIW neither Ebron nor Allen are good enough that their TE role is a lock and it's not worth arguing with you over.

You will not get a better blocking TE than Allen. None of his money is guaranteed so there is zero reason to cut him before the end of camp. This also means that he has zilch leverage and there is a pretty good chance he gets restructured to exchange imaginary money for lower guarantees via a signing bonus or something. That is what it all boils down to.

And Hollister is more of a TE than Ebron. You are just hanging on this flawed idea that because he once was a first round pick there must be something interesting in him but there really is not. He is a big slot receiver that hates contact.

Will Tye is a more intriguing TE prospect than Ebron.

Hollister is not much of blocker. I'd cut Allen for Ebron if the money is similar and find a good blocker to be TE3. Hollister hopefully could be stashed in the practice squad with his brother.

With Solder gone to the Gints, and with Fleming and Waddle still unsigned, cutting an extremely good run-blocker/pass-blocker in order to sign a slow slot receiver for probably about the same money doesn't seem like the wisest course of action.

Put out another lineman and have him report.

A) what other lineman?
B) Allen did catch a lot of passes with the Colts, so it's not like he's totally incapable simply because he didn't with the Pats last season

Would be a great signing if he could catch...

Will Tye is a more intriguing TE prospect than Ebron.

Tye, in his first two NFL seasons (NYG):
... 3.1 catches/game (68% catch rate) .. 29.6 yds/game .. 2 TDs/season

Ebron, 4 seasons in DET:
... 3.3 catches/game (65% catch rate) ... 37 yds/game .. 3.7 TDs/season

Tye's 2018 cap hit = $705k

Ebron's 2018 cap hit = $3M? ... $5M?

As I said I don't think either are worthy of a big back and forth. I just don't like that you think I'm hanging on some idea he's a first RDer. This is not about Ebron this is about Allen who sucks. It's not fiscally responsible to have a 5 million + dollar blocking only TE. And I wouldn't want Ebron at that Dollar amount either. Neither is worth more than 3mil max.

The Pats will need to sign some, first.

You don't think that's in the plan? Even if it's not which is obviously a ludicrous thought McDermott or Garcia would still be better blockers than Allen and not much worse as receiving threats.

Ebron is often injured and has never lived up to even close to his athletic ability.

Keeping a player who didn't live up to the contract he signed last year wouldn't seem the wisest course of action.

Now I got sucked into an argument I didn't want. I just can't believe people actually want Allen back. I wish I had better vine to swing from than Ebron but Allen got to go.

Ebron and any blocking TE at TE3 is better than Hollister/Allen combo. And I only sign Ebron if it's cheaper.

Hollister/Tye are better options than Ebron. Allan will be better than any blocking TE you can come up with.

I a world where a Trey Burton who is neither a great pass catcher nor a good blocker gets a 8m APY contract I dont think it is totally absurd to pay an elite blocker like Allen 5m. Preferably (and most probably) it will be reduced via a paycut and incentives closer to 3.5-4m hit by the time the season starts.

If Tye or Hollister make some big leap this off-season then that will be a happy problem to have in camp regardless of who we might sign, draft, or retain. I think each could be decent NFL players neither has me thinking we should be relying on them.

The fact you say Allen and elite in the same sentence means we can stop this debate.
