Len Pasquarelli chimes in.

Disclaimers aside, Mallett looks like Patriots coup - NFL - CBSSports.com Football

Even before Friday night, there were whispers that New England and coach Bill Belichick, a man and a franchise whose due diligence on prospects is unrivaled, enacted one of the draft's heists in landing Mallett in the third round. The notion is likely to become more than just an idle suggestion.

As is the widely held belief that Belichick and the Patriots will nurture Mallett for a few seasons, surround him with the leadership and structure that exists in the organization, and then deem him either the successor to Tom Brady or attractive trade bait.

oy, he is really doomed now ... love it

In Bill I trust :rocker: gotta go chug the cool aid now...

The Pats are always developing a QB.

Brady was a developmental QB.

this isnt exactly rocket science. lol Those are the only two options.

people are drinking the cool aid all over ...

Well maybe they drafted him specifically to cut him at some point in the future. That was a possibility, but Len has gone and helpfully ruled that out.

It is unfortunately, Brady, who will be the trade bait in 3 years.

Phew... thank goodness. Thanks Len.

Why can't he retire as number 12 in Buffalo or Cleveland?

you know what I mean. Brady has done so much for NE. I think the Krafts are classy enough to let him retire there

not in a million years. Tom Brady will retire as #12

I wish I could say the same, but Brady seemed to be serious when he said he wanted to play until he was 40.

In the short time I've seen Mallet, he has a grasp of the offense that borders on freakish. I thought it was truly freakish until I discovered that the Arkansas offense he was in has an Erhardt strain (e..g, pro style offense). So it isn't too much of a transition for him to adapt to our version.

In three years he'll have corrected his footwork, mechanics, and will be totally immersed in the offense, and more than ready to start.

Count me on board that thinks that Mallett could be a great successor to Brady, he looked great last week and they ran plenty of offensive sets they typically run with Brady, to see if he can handle this offensive scheme, which he did with flying colors (so far). Brady's contract, however, runs until he's 37, I don't know they can keep Mallett on the bench that long. A lot depends on how Brady ages, and what Mallett shows in practice.

The Brady Transition will eventually be awkward as hell, but I'd love to have Mallett sitting in the wings if we can work it. I suspect the Peyton Transition (which is looking to happen a bit earlier) will be equally as awkward. Two legends moving on... it's never easy.

Mallett threw up ridiculous numbers against the best defenses in the country in the SEC, his "white-board" work drawing up plays with Gruden for the ESPN special solidified it with me. I think he even said in his combine press conference that his job and strength is to read defenses, he can't run, but he can make throws. He's going to be a Pro Bowler somewhere, hopefully for us someday!

I think we should stop calling Mallet the next Brady because he beat up on the Jags 2nd and 3rd string defense.

Mallet will probably be traded before Brady leaves this team.

I think we should ask for two #1's and two #2's for him. Shouldn't be a problem since ESPN is drooling all over him this first week of the preseason.

Like Bledsoe? The kid has talent, but they all do to some extent. What sets the best apart from the rest here isn't quite as easily achieved as some persist in assuming. Remember, KOC was so impressive they let him be the #2 after Brady went down. Then the next year an UDFA passed him on the depth chart and he ended up a captain on the JETS... Have to see them progress - never assume they will. And you have to see them perform against someone other than the future burger flippers of America - and perform consistently at that level before you begin to make a judgement. And the only similarity between what we do and what Arkansas did is terminology...which is helpful out of the gate but that's about it...

Montana, Namath, Unitas, etc etc

Johnny U wearing a Chargers uni was just wrong. And, there's nothing wrong the Chargers unis. TFB slinging it for anyone but the Flying Elvis will be a sore site. Hope it never happens.

I liked almost everything he did, but the eye opener was him scrambling to his right and throwing on the run. He showed decent speed doing that, and while his throw was high as I recall, he looked very natural throwing at full speed and he threw it with a lot of mustard. I'd like to see him get more time this preseason.
