Running Game Question

You may be a relatively new fan, but you make an excellent point.

I can't understand why they don't allow Maroney to run outside, towards the sidelines. He would be deadly on sweeps and pitchouts. I don't believe his strength is the inside running game.

This has mystified me all year.

:ditto: ..........

This is my thought as well. I was hoping they'd get this working for this year, but I think they didn't focus on it, as they were zone for Maroney and straight up for Morris, maybe?

I don't know, but there top three receivers are new, so they had a lot to work on on offense. You can only do so much well.

Bottom line to me, is Maroney can be as good as his will to succeed and learn. No lack of talent, but talent isn't the most important part of playing running back, it's determination, IMO.

There will be reason why we didn't take it to the outside more and i am sure they will be good reasons. Some could be;

1. Field Turf is terrible to cut on even when it's dry so you want to keep the ball going up the middle if you can.

2. Outside runs need TE's to get out there and block as well as a line to slant and cross block the line is use to dropping back and blocking the pass rush going straight ahead isn't too dissimilar. Guards need to be very quick if they are too pull and i don't think our guards have the speed against 9 in the box.

3. Receivers have to be relied on to hold a solid block or you can get stuffed for a big loss then we would all blame lomo for not getting N-S quicker. Our receivers have been running routes most of the time with very little blocking could you trust that to hold up all game for an outside run?

4. The cold will play a factor every hit in the cold is more painful outside runs mean about 10 men getting hit every play inside the receivers can fly take away some of the secondary much better and if the back break free the cut block is much easier and has greater effect in the open.

my guess is it would be a combination of the weather and the defense mangini was using.
if they're going to go w/2 down linemen and that muddle huddle linebacker group then the smart thing is probably just to take the 3-4 yards up the middle that they're basically giving you.
the whole point of that d is to make you guess where everybody will be, but you don't have to guess about blowing the 2 guys in front of you off the ball.
