I will just make my own rumor up... Patriots trade a 4th for Haynesworth, sign Mankins and pick up Merrimen off the trash heap after SD cuts him.

There is nothing realistic about that possibility, IMO.

Hali is a rising star at a position that produces few stars. He might be the 2nd best every down OLB in the AFC after James Harrison. He'd be a pro bowler if he were on the Patriots and Jets.

Mankins is a Pro Bowler too. Value for value.

Fixed it for you. Mankins killed his own value by not signing the tender.
Same issue happened with Julius Peppers. Even if teams were interested they couldn't trade for him because he wasn't under contract.

I wouldn't waste the franchise tag on Mankins because he won't sign it anyways. Granted that means he will have to miss another season, but so far his agent is in his head and has convinced his client that's the way to go. Kinda idiotic imo. Missing 2/3 of a season and NOT GETTING PAID during that time or playing for 7M instead of 8M. Losing 10 game paychecks in a 16 game season at a salary of 7M = 4.375M dollars lost. Only way for Mankins to make up that kind of money is to get some team to give him a 9-10m per year contract next offseason. And that ain't happening.

The Pats decided before opening day to go with 4 WR who can play plus Price et al. The main relevant changes since then are Moss was swapped for Branch, the young TEs have performed well, and Faulk was swapped for Woodhead.

I don't see why the WR count would change.

From the way they were talking on the radio today Mankins just doesnt want to play for the Pats again, could be some sort of trade worked out. Not sure of the mechanics invloved with an unsigned player but I would say hes gone, hopefully we get someones else problem that can help us on defense.

patriots are more likely to trade mankins before he becomes a FA after the end of the year. I can't see Bill not getting something for him.

A slightly more realistic possibility:

Mankins for Tamba Hali (assuming he hits free agency and is franchised)

Hali knows the system and the Chiefs will be looking for guys to protect the QB. Could work.

For one, player for player trades are EXTREMELY rare in the NFL. For another, why would the Chiefs give us their premier pass rusher for an unhappy offensive lineman looking for a big contract?

I don't see why a 3-4 DT/DE isn't a need. The team's run D is sub-standard.

A DT = NT. We already have a few of those, including the best NT in the league. We need a 3-4 DE, unless Belichick has bigger plans for Deaderick.
