Patriots Player Departure Rumor: Moss to Vikings?

I'm not up on the Vikes so I have no idea about how Minn fans perceive ownership/the team or the stadium situation (I'm way too Patriot centric). If what you say is correct, that is maybe the most compelling impetus for the Vikes to overpay.
I'd go so far as to say that the expectation for Moss to be in Minn is taking hold.... to not get him now will be another public relations negative for ownership/management.

I say BB phone the Vikes back tomorrow and tell em the trade is off UNLESS they make X, Y, and Z concessions. Classic bait and switch. Oh we were only talking about X yesterday huh? Times have changed bub. The hype is huge now, are you really gonna disappoint the fans and take the media fallout?

Ditka DRAFT! At least I hope that's what happens. That's what I'd do.

haha almost best one yet

Re: Moss for a 3rd is illogical

I don't know about that because the Pats have got 3rd picks the same year a player departs.

That could be right. I know that you can't get compensation until after the free agent contracts are all signed and done and any free agents your team signed are also used to calculate the offset for what you lost.

New twitter from shefter:

Said one source familiar with Moss-to-Minnesota trade talks: "I'd be shocked if it doesn't happen." Expect it to happen Wednesday.

Minnesota and NE plan to complete the blockbuster trade that will send Randy Moss back to Vikings on Weds, according to multiple sources.

wow

just seen this news

Unless we have a top notch WR as a replacement then this is a terrible move unless

  1. Randy really wants to move and has asked to be traded
  2. BB really does see this as a transition year and we go into next years draft with a ton of ammo to stockpile and go after Green or Jones

If they trade Moss, then I'm inclined to see it as the second option: he thinks they have no shot at a SB this year. Since Brady will likely be 35 the next time they take the field after this season and all, I'd be pretty pissed if they're going around trading guys like Randy Moss if they think they can win it this year.

Brady is going to be pist.

Well, at least it's not the first time they've traded his top receiving weapon directly after he signed an extension.

yep, plus add Moss' second supposed outburst on Tues (after the press conference in week 1) and Bill has obviously had enough

The Pats won the SB after losing supposedly their two best offensive players in 2001. They also won in 2003 after cutting the guy who was supposedly the bedrock of their locker room.

I don't think BB puts such labels on his teams, he just does what he thinks is best for this year and next, prioritizing neither. It could be postulated that Moss' week 1 outburst was a contributing factor in Brady's meltdown against the Jets. Here is a post I made over on the other board with some other considerations.

* Moss hasn't been the 2007 guy for some time. He certainly demands a lot of attention and that aids in getting guys open and usually gives NE a half man advantage in the run game. That said, his big play ability just isn't special anymore. You don't see him outjump guys much and he'll have plenty of plays like this past weekend where he gets two hands on a tough ball and can't pull it in. As I said in the game wrap up thread, Moss' biggest asset to the offense since the middle of last year was that of a decoy. If you can trade a decoy for at least a 2nd rounder in the middle of the year you have to consider it.

* If Randy really did ask for a trade, then you have to make it happen. An unhappy Randy is precisely the type of guy these kids don't need right now.

* I have to imagine Edelman has a role in this. He hasn't really seen the field all that much (largely due to injury) but he is a serious weapon.

* Something I've been thinking for a while is how, as good as Moss is, he does give the opposing offense a pretty clear defensive strategy. What made the 2001-2005 offense unique is you had 3-4 equally talented guys so it wasn't obvious what the role of each would be on any given play. It also wasn't as obvious who was the #1 read on any given play.

* This also indicates to me that the Pats are going to be running even more multi TE sets, which I think is a good thing. Those kids are for real.

All told, I'm not surprised that this is happening. It will likely have an immediate impact for a few games, but I think that the year end offense will resemble the 2003 bunch, and that is a good thing IMO. I'm personally intrigued at seeing what this rag-tag bunch can do without its star receiver. It is also possible that NE might then swing a 2nd trade with SD to get VJ, which would obviously counter some of the points above (Edelman, no true #1) but he is a different receiver than Moss, a more precise route runner, better blocker though not as much of a deep threat.

Unsure unsure unsure. I like the thought that there may now be room for Edelman, but man that's a lot of TD catches walking out the door.

Who knows what's really been going on behind the scenes though?

Indeed, the more I read the more it seems Moss threw the toys out the pram again after Mon night. After the week 1 rant Bill's probably had enough especially of he had no intention of extending him anyway next year

Maybe we can go after V-Jax but I suspect we will go to what we have and put trust in Tate, Edelman, Price etc to step up, see how far we can get thos year and then go after a top WR, DE, OLB, RB etc next year and get agressive in FA. We certainly have the picks

In some ways in may benefit Brady as we have been much better when he spreads the ball around

I didn't imagine Moss's time with the Patriots would end well...

And look, it doesn't look like it will. Huh.

Maybe Randy Moss can be this years Terry Glenn?

We all know the Patriots are about team first and if Moss is being selfish and has a bad attitude then it is time for him to go. Tom Brady and BB won 3 titles when Moss was a Viking, they can win another one with him back there.

That is a good point. Lets hope that we can do the same again.

What strikes me about all of this, is from all the media reports in the preseason up to game 1, Moss was supposed to be having a good time and working hard.

But if his time is up, that's it then.

It is what it is.

Wow! is really all i can say, i hope that another shoe will drop following this trade. What nobody seems to be really concerned about is welker in this situation and our empty set we love soo much.....

With defenses finally not having to worry about giving up the big play downfield welker is gonna be like a tupac double disc all eyez on him. alot of ppl here are getting what they've been asking for and we all know how tht saying goes....

We need to continue our commitment to the run even more so now, and get back to the patriots offensive philosophy of old if we are going to survive w/o randy. But you can't be a high powered offense w/o a deep threat in imo

Who were the deep theats in 2004? Patten? That offense actually outscored the 2007 team (even if you exclude te SB) over their final 8 games, 234 to 230.

You don't need "deep threats" you need good reievers. The league is full of guys who can run real fast and still don't get open. Time will tell if NE's receivers/TEs can get the job done, but I am optimistic.

Re: Moss for a 3rd is illogical

The compensation has to be very good, IMO, for the Pats to do this.

A Jets source on Twitter, @incarceratedbob (who has broken a lot of stuff), has varying reports. He initially said it was for a 1st and a 3rd. But he has also heard 2 3rd rounders or a conditional 1st.

You may be forgetting that the 2004 team had the best RB in the league that year. So, yeah, it's not the same.

Not in the least. The TEs are much better than that season and you may be forgetting that Branch missed quite a bit of time and Brown wasn't the same guy.
