Patriots Player Departure Rumor: Moss to Vikings?

Re: Moss for a 3rd is illogical

Compensation is based on the contract that the free agent signs. As a free agent Moss would command one of the top salaries on the market, so the top free agent compensation is a 3rd round pick in the year AFTER you lose him. Comp picks are sandwiched at the very end of rounds so are less valuable than regular picks. You also can't trade them.
I don't know about that because the Pats have got 3rd picks the same year a player departs.

The only player I'd want back from the Vikings is Jared Allen or Kevin Williams. DE is the one big hole that the Pats have. Otherwise the compensation better START with a 1st round pick.
Don't want Peterson or Winfield or any other Viking on that roster. Peterson wouldn't fix this D. Neither would a CB who can't rush the passer.

That would be great, but I think you are setting yourself up for a big dissapointment. Hope I'm wrong but I can't see them giving up their best player on defense or a 1st round pick for a 33 year old receiver.

Again I hope I'm wrong.

just posted in the local paper here.

Moss to Vikings will be done Wednesday

Randy Moss' return to Minnesota appears to be just hours away from being made official.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the Vikings and New England plan to complete the trade that will send the wide receiver back to the Vikings on Wednesday, according to multiple sources. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Tuesday evening that the Vikings and Patriots had been engaged in serious trade talks.

One source told ESPN, "I'd be shocked if it doesn't happen."

The Vikings apparently were so confident they were going to land Moss on Tuesday that they dealt defensive end Jayme Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns in the afternoon to clear roster space.

For whatever reason, however, the Moss deal slowed down shortly thereafter and was not completed.

What remains unclear is if Moss is going to be given a contract extension by the Vikings or if he will join the team playing in the final year of his deal. That's what he has been doing in New England and he hasn't been happy about it.

As Chip wrote on an earlier blog, the Vikings have made it clear they are all in for this season and thus going after Moss is only mildly surprising. Remember, Brad Childress' culture of accountability once focused on getting players who were the opposite of Moss. The realization Childress probably came to long ago is that while many of those players might be good people they can't make up your entire roster.

Moss will give Brett Favre the type of target he has wanted so badly this season and Favre has made it clear before he would love to play with Moss. Here is a very interesting article in the National Football Post writtten by former Packers executive Andrew Brandt that discussed Favre's disappointment with Green Bay's two failures to land Moss.

If Moss does receive an extension from the Vikings, it will be interesting to see the line of players outside the door of Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski. The Vikings have several players who will be free agents after this season and many have been told that extensions simply weren't going to be discussed.

Obviously, this was in large part because of the uncertainty over the collective bargaining agreement.

The problem is that since players were told that, Favre has been given $3 million more to return and now Moss might find himself with a multiyear contract. Linebackers Chad Greenway and Ben Leber aren't the type to complain but privately they can't be blamed if they wonder what's going on here. And that's only naming two of a group that includes Ray Edwards and Sidney Rice.

Then there is running back Adrian Peterson whose deal will void after the 2011 season. Peterson would like a new deal as soon as possible according to people in the know and telling him to be patient is only going to work for so long.

In the short term, this potential trade stands to be an excellent move for the Vikings. In the long term, it's likely just another sign that even without a new stadium this team is willing to spend money that rivals the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.

Excellent work, Bro. Thanks for sharing that with us.

We released J. James RB from our PS. Maybe Gerhardt is coming in (healthy?).

wow

just seen this news

Unless we have a top notch WR as a replacement then this is a terrible move unless

  1. Randy really wants to move and has asked to be traded
  2. BB really does see this as a transition year and we go into next years draft with a ton of ammo to stockpile and go after Green or Jones

Randy doesn't do that at this stage of his career with any regularity.

He needs more fiber and I guess the vikings are offering more fiber.

Re: Moss for a 3rd is illogical

I agree, it would seem Moss is more valuable than a slight position drop in the draft, at most to have his services for the season. The young receivers are still pretty raw. All will be young vets next season, and much easier to assess, their prospects. Not top mention this season's prospects for a winning record, and Playoff entry. So I would not believe it 'till I see it.

Adam12JT says 10 year vets command no more than a 5, no matter the salary signing. First I ever heard of that, but he ought to know. Still not worth jeopardizing a season's worth of service.

I'd rather see a solution to the Logan Mankins situation first, as a much higher priority.

I see Belichick is becoming a white supremacist.

We will get GUHHHRRRHART along with our various small white players (Welker, Edelman, Woodhead)

What's with the influx of Vikings supporters coming in reckoning they have the upper hand? You're 1-2 going to the Jets, playing catch up football and trying to improve your roster for win now with a QB who has a ****ed ankle.

Randy Moss for Toby '2 ypc' Gerhardt? That's a fair trade! Where do I signup? No offense but that move doesn't make sense for us either. He'd get maybe 2 snaps per game because the Pats very rarely utilize the FB in their offense.

By the way, congrats. This thread has passed "Trade Brady". This thread did it in less than seven hours, while it took the Brady thread over a year.

If we swap Moss for Gerdhardt I will eat my hat because it will be obvious that someone either has incriminating evidence that will land BB 30 years in the slammer or he has lost his marbles. And I don't think BB has lost em yet. But moves like this make me wonder... until I find out what we're getting back in return.

Either you missed adding the or something like that (after your white supremacist comment) or you are an idiot. Enjoy the your next drink!

Wouldn't that make him a white minimalist?

Brady is going to be pist.

why could the jets suck thread not build in replies this fast

Correct on all accounts.

And here's a wild card that I'm surprised no one has mentioned, because it's staring us all in the face:

Might not the Vikings ~ especially as they campaign for a new Stadium ~ pay a premium to reverse The Greatest Public Relations Disaster of their history??

I'm not up on the Vikes so I have no idea about how Minn fans perceive ownership/the team or the stadium situation (I'm way too Patriot centric). If what you say is correct, that is maybe the most compelling impetus for the Vikes to overpay.
I'd go so far as to say that the expectation for Moss to be in Minn is taking hold.... to not get him now will be another public relations negative for ownership/management.
