Report: Wheatley to be released, Mankins activated

You mean whilhite and butler are better than wheatley???... fail.... well i wish we could have seen more from him before he hurt his hand against indy in 2008 was starting to make progress, but could never get on the field..

Is that even a question? What are you basing Wheatley being better than those two on. What has Wheatley ever shown besides looking OK for about half a game before going on IR? That's it, the sum total of his Patriot career 11 games, 1 start, 3 tackles, 2PD.

Wasn't wheatley healthy last year? Why was he behide the dept chart behide both of them if he's better than them?

Re: Report: Wheatley to be realeased

I disagree....I think you will see a huge difference within a few weeks.

What would you consider a huge difference? Interested to hear exactly what people are expecting from Mankins.

We will

Playing in the Canadian Football League

Wheatley obviously needs to get himself healthy.
If/when he does, then he might be signed to the PS, for which he still has eligibility.

Re: Report: Wheatley to be realeased

Connolly started well but the more film built up on his play the more he was exposed. He's a valuable member of the team and there will be some rotation in there anyways so he'll play. But he's no Mankins ... all but a few in the league are not Mankins

MEH ... another Pioli draft bust... :rolleyes2:

I sure hope we can go 6-1 in the next 7 games. We'll see.

If he was any good, the Pats would've kept him.

The McCourty pick is helping us forget that Wheatley was ever drafted.

So I guess this is a "No" on the whole "Wheatley will be activated soon and replace Arrington in the starting line -up" thing ?

Finally I won't confuse Wheatley and Wilhite any more.

Closing the book on Wheatley - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Cornerback Terrence Wheatley's time with the Patriots came to an end Saturday when he was waived by the team. While it's possible he could return on the practice squad if he clears waivers, at this time, Wheatley's two-plus years in New England can probably best be summed up this way: Promise overshadowed by injuries.

Wheatley was a late second-round draft choice in 2008, the 62nd overall pick. He appeared to be coming on during his rookie season, drawing his first career start at Indianapolis on Nov. 2.

Watching Wheatley cover Marvin Harrison in the early stages of that game -- when he was credited with two passes defended -- it certainly looked like the future was bright.

But Wheatley injured his wrist later in the game, which ended his season. All the momentum he had built to that point was abruptly halted.

It turned out to be a preview of what was to come.

Re: Report: Wheatley to be realeased

Chargers. And he was put back in again to finish the game.

Following week he played the entire game. A game in which Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis ran for over 100 yards with his productive runs coming right up the middle and towards the left side. When BJGE had problems in the first half, it was on runs going to the sideline. I'd say whatever he was taken out for in the SD game was immediately corrected quite nicely.

Once again, I see Mankins as a definite upgrade, just not one that is worth an extra $7 million per year to this team. There are more crucial areas to spend that $7 million.

I'm sure that the Patriots, specifically Robert Kraft, would love to disagree with the bolded. In fact, by all reports, they already have. Mankins is EASILY worth $7M more than Connolly. Not only because the team thinks so, but also because of reasons that I listed for you in another thread.

Really? So where do you see any indication of that from the Patriots side?

What "by all reports" (please list us an attribution on that one) show you that he came back because of anything the Patriots softened on versus what he has to go through in order to be an unrestricted free agent next year?

I'll give you the answer to that one: He came back in order to get his needed service in order to be a UFA next year. No other reason whatsoever. You can imagine that that delusional Bauer agent of his somehow has a deal with the Krafts brewing, but you'd be kidding yourself.

There are two paths for this to take:

1) He plays out his games this year and he's gone (high probability)

or

2) He re-ups next year for the Pats at the PATS' NUMBER (low probability)

The Patriots saying "Oh my, going 6-1 without you convinced us that we MUST spend an extra $7 million on our LG situation to improve without using one of our 6 picks in the draft next year after you publicly dissed the owner" is close to a zero possibility. The best a Mankin fan can pray for is option #2 - given the history of this FO, that is the ONLY way Mankins could remain a Patriot.

6 picks in the first 3 rounds and a capable fill-in in Connolly equals the Patriots being in full control of that negotiating position.

true but the second round picks in the last 4 years ,with the exception of this year leaves a lot to be desired...

I see what you are saying, Kontra but you need to define "worth". If the team goes 18-1 w/ Connolly at G, is he worth $7m less than Mankins to the team? IMO- no. On the flip side, if the Pats go 6-10 and Brady is sacked 50 times and gets hurt in the process, is Mankins now worth $8m more than Connolly? Maybe..

We can all agree that Mankins is a superior player and talent over Connolly. However, to date the downside of Mankins not playing has not been fully realized.

If there was any truth to that whatsoever then the Patriots would have offered Mankins a 4 year - $28 million dollar long term deal to have him end his hold out (ala what the Jets did with Revis.) Or agreed to a one year $7 million dollar deal.

The fact that the Patriots were willing to win 6 out of 7 games w/o Mankins and let him sit at home until he reported under the Patriots terms says they don't think he is worth that much. We can say the Patriots do think he is worth at least $3.2 million based on that is what they initially offered to pay him this year.
