Why would Mayo say that he would be better next season if he was not under the impression that he would have more than 10 months at HC?

Thunder did not utilize his cap space this season. Thunder let Laurel and Hardy control the draft netting 1 player in Maye from the 3rd draft slot. Stan and Ollie gave away Ladd McKonky who might have made the difference in a couple of more wins. He was at least playing unlike Polk and Baker.

Who are all the new players acquired to make a 4 win team better? Jacoby went 1 - 4 as the starter before rookie Maye stepped in.

Thunder sat on his booster seat throne and said nothing letting Mayo walk the plank. Jon Jon was visibly upset with the playcalling spilling his hot chocolate. That's not how they do it on Xbox.

Kraft screwed Mayo and got off scot free in Massachusetts.
Even if that’s all true none of that means Mayo was screwed by Kraft.

Mayo screwed up. He thought playing cards in the back of the plane was coaching. He thought he had two years for sure so he put it on cruise control this year and sleep walked through the season. He wasted an entire year, had nothing to show for it, and Kraft finally saw through him.

Mayo spent the entire year promising to do better next year when he should have spent every day working his tail off to be better the next day than he was the day before.

But he didn’t, and he wasn’t, and he gave no reason to believe he’d be better next year either.

Mayo screwed himself, he screwed the players, his coaching staff, the Krafts, and the fan base. The only thing Kraft did to screw anybody was to hire Mayo. Kraft would’ve screwed us all worse if he hadn’t fired Mayo after this dumpster fire of a season.

If this was a Vrabel directive, to me this underscores the difference between naming an assistant coach “heir to the throne” (Mayo) vs an outside hire (Vrabel).

I don’t blame Mayo but stepping into a system where you are essentially promoted you have no leverage in personal or executives.

On the other hand, Vrabel had upper hand in negotiations as an outside hire.

Sure, Vrabel has a better resume, but both were well loved Patriots LBs from the “dynasty” era.

I’m sure after the season we had it’s easier for Vrabel to point out flaws in the ‘24 leadership, but it’s not as if 2023 was much better when Mayo stepped in.

I really don’t think Eliot Wolf is a bad personnel guy… but clearly the hierarchy of decision making was flawed to the point Vrabel had to demand some changes.

My gut says they focus on getting tougher on both lines, establish themselves as a hard-to-play team, and build from there. Mayo’s “weaponize” comment looks dumber and dumber after failing to do so, and not addressing the OL.

I don’t honestly know what Glaser did or her impact on decision making, but good news that Vrabel is establishing a new culture

Here's a thing I dug out that I apparently wrote about Grier back in 2000 right after he was fired. I don't remember the details on some of the things I wrote, and I did a crappy job of making it make sense, but I did include some of what apparently transpired over that offseason before he was let go.

A lot of:

Time flies when you're having fun.

Yet as a minority, 53% of players in the NFL are black. Why is that? Racism against whites? Less opportunities for whites? Maybe they are hired for their talent and ability. That is what everyone would argue. Wouldnt that be the same for coaching hires? Teams look for the best candidates.

You think 5 black coaches in 80 years is a indication that black people can't coach?

That's a argument you actually want to make?

Lol.

The thread has been hijacked again, but this needs to be responded to.

What about that almost half the teams never had a starting black QB until 2000? Or a generation ago there were less than a handful starting. The NFL still had been considerably minority at other positions for many years back then.

Isn't the QB considered the coach on the field?

It's about opportunities. If you can run at a burning speed or have exceptional skill sets by analytics you get the opportunity as an athlete.

If you have to lead or think, well that's another story.

Let me get this straight.

1 - Mayo took a HC job from Kraft aware that he had 17 games to turn a 4 - 13 team to a .500 team with no QB.
2 - Everyone agreed that Jacobi would start this season while a rookie QB sat on the bench and learned.
3 - Jocobi burned through approximately 29% of the schedule winning 1 game, but everybody was on board. Remember?
4 - Enter Maye who played well, but made rookie mistakes that cost Mayo wins. Everybody is on board. Remember?
5 - The Pats 2024 draft amounts to a plie of 5hit after Maye. Everybody sees it, but Mayo is only the HC. Right?
6 - Stan Wolf and Ollie Groh failed at addressing huge holes at WR and OL through FA and the draft.
7 - Kraft told Mayo looks like I'm going to roll my 2024 cap space into 2025, too bad you wont be around.

Kraft screwed Mayo. Name 1 new player in 2024 who is a difference maker? You cant because there are none.

A - Vrabel gets the most cap space in the NFL NFL Salary Cap Space | Over The Cap.
B - The # 4 draft slot, but he is concerned about Stan and Ollie who still have their positions, so he brought his own guy Cowden.
C - Maye already broke in because he made his rookie mistakes with Mayo.

Mayo got shafted by Thunder.

I’m speculating that Mayo did not know how to conduct a basic interview and it became an issue immediately after he became head coach. So, the Krafts gave her an appropriate title as she helped Mayo while sitting in on and helping organize interviews of coaches because Mayo was a moron. Now she has gone back to her previous responsibilities because Vrabel isn’t the “R” word that Mayo was. This theory connects a lot of dots.
Moron is a strong word. He’s a football player. Never had to sit for a job interview, maybe ever. Inexperienced is accurate. Never should have been promoted, never should have accepted the heir apparent clause. Needed to learn and have other experiences.

The whole thing was a disaster from the start. Kraft was at least smart enough to take a mulligan and fix it.

"Once they cross that white line, there's nothing I can do for them."

If Maye had beaten out Brissett in camp, like he eventually said he did, he should have started. 'Everyone' was not on board with just running Brissett out there, unless he was still better than Maye, which is what we all assumed.

Mayo got shafted by Thunder.

All of the things you listed were completely understood. It wasn't Mayo's job to win games this season, it was to provide some indication that he was capable of the job. The bar was very low. The number one indictment is what happened to our defense. We had absolutely no ability to game plan or adjust defensively. By all accounts he chose Covington over Stevie. If Mayo can't at least add value in that department he is absolutely useless. Why have a coach who knows nothing about Xs and Os, has no clear vision for the team, and can't or won't deliver the message of accountability?

The only way Mayo got shafted was by being given an opportunity he was horribly unqualified for and for Kraft allowing Mayo's hubris to put him in that position in the first place.

"Once they cross that white line, there's nothing I can do for them."
I thought this comment by Mayo was ridiculous. Another example of foot in mouth. You saw BB and other coaches making motions to players from the sidelines asking them to reposition themselves. Make adjustments. Reminders of technique, etc.

A coach's job never stops. Even on game days.
If Maye had beaten out Brissett in camp, like he eventually said he did, he should have started. 'Everyone' was not on board with just running Brissett out there, unless he was still better than Maye, which is what we all assumed.
Sure but that oline was scary. I still don't have an issue with Maye sitting the first few games.

No point in going any further.

1. No one expected Mayo to turn the team into a .500 one. It was expected the team would show some improvement and individual players would improve, that they would not quit when things got tough and he would control the locker room. Also that he might be able to make adjustments and control his coordinators and that he could present a strong face to the media.

He did NONE of these. Complete fail. Nothing to do with the record. I think he was as bad as Rust.

Yes Kraft screwed Mayo by giving him a job he didn’t earn and was no way ready for it.

However Mayo knew for a few years he would be the next head coach, yet when the time cam he was just as unprepared as he was when he found out he was coach in waiting. Then when he became head coach it seems like he didn’t do a whole lot of coaching, kind of just walked around the facility.

I don’t think it’s strong enough. I think he undermined Bill the previous year, leaked dirt to Tom Curran, and kissed Kraft’s butt to get the job. Then didn’t know the first thing about how to do the job. He also trashed Bill during his first couple of press conferences while Bill was trying to find another coaching job.

He played most of the team’s starters against Buffalo’s 2nd stringers to win a meaningless game costing the team a lot of draft capital. We likely would have traded down to about #4 and picked up an early second and maybe a future first. That would have been huge for our rebuild and I think he did out of spite knowing he was being fired which is why the Krafts had him escorted out shortly after the game.

I’ll call him a moron. I’ll also call him a snake and many other words that’s not appropriate for this site.

Right, both sides don't have a clue what she does or doesn't do.
More to the point, she may not, either. Not that she would even realize that.

Those who don’t know what they don’t know cause the most damage.

Craft used Mayo because he thought hiring a minority HC would get him in the HOF.

Craft used Glaser too.

Craft really set Mayo up to lose.

Especially after his HOF bid went down in flames.

Now your man Craft is in panic mode. If BB turns UNC into a winner its going be a long time for Craft to make it into Canton.
