Report: Pats interested in Dumervil

Pats showed interest in Jennings too

I don't think we have the cap space for a guy like Dumervil. Nor would we outbid someone for him.

At under 6 feet, suffice it to say, he does not seem like a Belichick DE/OLB.

That said, McD might like him, and the Abraham stuff did slow to a halt once the Dumervil stuff got interesting. I doubt we're seriously interested, but maybe we want to see how it plays out before moving on.

I don't think we'll sign him but I'd hate for size to be the reason why. Crable was the prototypical size for a LB for BB's d. If a guy can play, he can play. I know people are tired of hearing about Clay Mathews but he's undersized. Would be awesome to steal him from the donkeys.

Getting Dumervil would take some of the sting out of losing Welker to Denver.

"interested"

There's no arguing he can rush the passer. But BB will want him to do more than that in this defense at the price he'll eventually come at. It would come down to whether McD can vouch for him as a 3-down player.

Not enough cap space? At $16.4 mil under the cap?

Well, if that's not enough room; than no one can sign him except tampa, phi, jax, cle, cin. Those are the only teams who are $20+ in cap space.

Oh, and he already agreed to $8/per w/ denver; that's not too much at all.

With Belichick changing defensive philosophies a bit in recent years, his height might not be as much of an issue as I the past.

Sign the Beast

The Flying Elvis Dummerville can be his wrestling name.

Clearly his size makes this a pass rush specialist and normally he would get more than that is worth on the market but with contracts down maybe we can get him for a nice price. Plus he is to young and talented to not be a little more than just a pass rusher but his size does limit how we would use him.

Also have to wonder if this is what could be slowing up the Abraham deal or (hopefully not) could be what caused it to die if it were dead. We might have just put a slight hold and he could be fine waiting or he might be mad we showed interest in signing him than put a hold on it to look at Elvis. Or maybe one has nothing to do with the other but its not a stetch to think there is some sort of corelation to Abraham and Elvis.

I like him as a pass rush specialist, but he's going to get paid as a lot more than that. I'm sure the Pats are interested at the right price, but I'm guessing that price will get blown away by another team.

I don't see it, but I also wouldn't be opposed to it, depending on the price.

I have a feeling he'll be pretty costly as a one-dimensional player.

Would be a great addition, but I don't think they can afford him unless a couple of players restructure their deals.

True, but wasn't that the biggest criticism of Andre Carter and Mark Anderson?

Iirc, the staff also doubted Chandler Jones's strength/ability to stop the run (and were thankfully wrong).

So, Bill is willing to bring in this kind of guy, in recent years...

Elvis already renegotiated down to $8 mil/per with Denver. That's what you're looking at. It's do-able.

I tend to agree

However I could see us keeping Elvis in with Spikes designed to shore up the run to his side or Adrian Wilson in that role. In obvious run situations, Elvis would not be in the building.

If we get Dumervil (for the right price) we could trade him back to the Broncos.. for Wes!

And having made that joke again I am forced to admit Id keep Dumervil. As much as it tears me up to see Wes go its even more painful to watch QBs like Flacco sit back in the pocket and pick our suspect secondary apart.

Was it the Patriots that doubted Jones could stop the run? I thought it was mostly attributed to "analysts" and reporters.

Anderson yes, but I don't think so on Carter. He was a 3-down player who was a beast against the run.

I doubt think the staff doubted Jones against the run, I think it's just the fans. Fans didn't think he'd be ready yet. But with those long arms and the tape he had in Cuse, I doubt Belichick was surprised by Jones' performance.
