To be fair, Peyton's never denied that HDH had been shipped to his wife. His position has conveniently been that his wife's medical history is off limits.

But that still leaves the question that the New York Daily News asked several weeks ago: why would someone of the Manning's wealth and stature use a shady clinic, when they could have gone to world class medical facilities in Indianapolis and Denver to seek treatment for Mrs. Manning?

"Why would an elite athlete with access to the best physicians in the world receive treatment at a facility that evangelizes for testosterone, human growth hormone and other drugs banned by the NFL? Why were Manning and his old team, the Colts, affiliated with a clinic that former employees say routinely cut corners and was horribly mismanaged?"

Mostly, what Manning has said about the Al Jazeera report is that it is "complete garbage" and I think he has said just that more than once. It's a very broad brush.

You can see the influence of Ari Fleischer here - it's an artful bit of spin. To the casual observer and to the squadrons of gullible Peyton sycophants that populate The Sporting Press, their intrepid hero has issued a complete and uncategorical denial. It's all garbage.

Now, sayeth Mr. Professional Spinmeister Ari (under cover of darkness) , Peyton didn't really deny everything. Just the parts he couldn't live with himself. And, in the process, he did unceremoniously toss the mother of his children (er, ... at least we think they're his children) under The Big Greyhound Bus that is coincidentally idling outside whenever Manning has to cover his tracks.

People who have to choose their words so carefully that they hire professionals to do it for them often have something to hide.

But Jim Nantz and ESPN say there's nothing to see here, so I guess that's good enough for me.

In other words, they're simply flat out lying and figure there's no harm in doing so as long as no one's under oath. There is no "wordsmithing" going on. That comes later when the lawyers and prosecutors get involved.

Until and unless he's under oath, Manning will completely deny that he used or received HGH and use his wife as a smokescreen. Let me put it this way, if a journalist, in a one on one, sit down interview, asks Manning point blank whether he used HGH, he will deny it. In the meantime, he's issuing broad, meaningless, categorical denials in the form of statements and answers to questions in a press conference setting, where he can move on to the next question.

And, he's only throwing his wife "under the bus" if he asks her to lie under oath for him. We're a long way from depositions and possible perjury. It took Balco years to unravel. This will probably take another 18--36 months to play itself out.

If I had to guess at this stage, I'd guess that male and female HGH was sent to the Manning household, so Peyton could have some aircover.

LOL, he doesn't need any "air cover", or any other type of cover. This is going nowhere. I'm sure Goober and the Mrs. haven't lost one wink of sleep over this, nor should they. There are God knows how many actual journalists, as opposed to columnists, who didn't bother with the PSI experiments. There are sports radio stations all across the country who didn't bother with the PSI experiments.

It's an embarrassment that nobody in the Boston media felt it worth the time and/or money to buy a couple of dozen footballs and do the experiments every week during the season, or at least for all the home games. People at 98.5 and WEEI should probably have gotten fired for the lack of PSI experiments by the stations. But, of all the Boston media who would not have to do it in order to do their jobs, columnists are at the top of the list, so criticizing Shaughnessy for not doing it is ludicrous.
