Yahoo, some news from minicamp on his blog.

- Al Groh in attendance talking with Belichick . . . when's that Supplemental Draft ?

- Klecko's weight down, not working with DL.

Plus other stuff.

Minicamp quick hits

FOXBOROUGH -- Quick hits from this morning's practice at Patriots mandatory minicamp at Gillette Stadium:

The session was held on the practice fields behind the stadium under partly cloudy skies. Temperatures were in the 70s and players were in shorts, jerseys, and helmets (no pads).

Players not on the field included receiver Deion Branch (who, according to Jerome Solomon's report in this morning's Globe, will not report to camp due to dissatisfaction with contract extension talks), tight end Daniel Graham, defensive lineman Jarvis Green, offensive linemen Dan Koppen, Brandon Gorin, and Nick Kaczur, defensive backs Artrell Hawkins, Hank Poteat, and Rodney Harrison, and running back Patrick Pass.

NFL Europe players Ray Ventrone (safety), Jeff Roehl (offensive tackle), Earl Charles (running back), Rich Musinski (wide receiver), and Zuriel Smith (wide receiver) also weren't on the field.

...

Fourth-year player Dan Klecko appears to have shed some weight and wasn't working with the defensive linemen. He stayed with the linebackers and defensive backs for seven-on-seven passing drills.

In one of the team's seven-on-seven passing drills, quarterback Tom Brady appeared displeased with the execution of the offense. The defense seemed to have the edge throughout.

...

A lot of players not at practice. Of the three we were concerned with, Harrison and Koppen were indeed absent, but Light was there. Interesting that Green, Poteat, Kaczur, Pass, Graham, Hawkins, or Gorin weren't there either.

Well, I guess they are going to try the Klecko LB expirement again?

Well, my official appoligies to any of you I might have scoffed at for suggesting they would try it again.

I wonder if he has some incriminating evidence on Bill.

To me the biggest surprise is Klecko at LB...since we all thought that was not going to happen...

Potentially a role as a run stuffer of inside pass rush guy, doesn't necessarily need to start just have a role where he adds value and can contribute on St's also.

Which would make this the third year of that experiment. It's failed the last two...miserably. But it's certainly worth it to try again, especially in light of our current depth at the position.

dryheat, I think he failed two years ago at LB, but not last year. When he showed up, the word was that he was back to looking like a DL.

IIRC Klecko had no reps at LB last year in camp. 2 years ago our LB corp was very different. Both in exp and depth.

They were all excused absences though, besides Branch.

The Klecko thing is interesting, but I'm hoping the team hires Otis my man as a defensive backs coach.

Maybe due to injuries??? I would think that very possible..

Green, Graham, and Kaczur had shoulder injuries last season. Pass struggled with his hamstring and had the toe surgery. Gorin had a knee or ankle problem to start last season. I don't recall any problems for Hank or Artrell.

Hawkins was listed as probable on the injury report for the final 6 games of the season (incl. playoffs) with a thigh injury. He missed @ Buf and vs Mia. (in the Miami game, about 6 Pats starters missed it, with Bruschi being the only one listed as questionable. The rest were probable)

Poteat wasn't listed on the injury report as far back as I checked (@ Mia, 11/11)
