I felt Crable did show promise in preseason last year, which we're about to watch this year and judge this years rookies on.

So if his biggest downside is that he showed no promise, then he must be pretty good

“Yeah, it’s kind of tough,’’ said Crable. “I mean you’re sitting in meetings and you don’t see yourself on the film and you’re watching the coach talk to other people and watch other people get better while you’re just sitting and trying to get out there. So, it’s kind of tough on the mental [side], but it will be fine.’’


Crable said he felt like he lost some of the positive momentum he built during the spring by missing the first nine days of practice.


“Yeah, I wanted to start with everybody else. To not to be able to was kind of like a setback in and of itself,’’ he said. “But once you get back out there and get your feet wet it will all pan out.’’

“I haven’t been in pads for like a year now, so it’s kind of different to be hitting people,” he said. “But it’s pretty good.”

The good news is all was not lost during the layoff.

“We watched a lot of film, and I’ve been in all the meetings, so I knew what to do,” Crable said. “I just have to work on some technique things — get down the pass rush and things like that. It kind of feels weird coming off the ball, so I have to get used to the snaps and get better starts.”

"I feel kind of different now because the spring was without pads and I was running around," he said. "But now with the pads on, I feel a little slower and I've got to pick it up I'm not used to having the pads on." Patriots' coach Bill Belichick confirmed that Crable has a lot of catching-up to do.

"Shawn did a lot last year in training camp and in the preseason games, but he wasn't able to do much in the regular season," he said. "He's behind, but he's a smart kid, he works hard, and when he's been given the chance to perform, he's been pretty well prepared.

"Durability and consistency is part of it, too," Belichick added. "I know he's been frustrated by that, but it's good to see him back out there now."

Crable is concentrating most on his hands and getting off the ball, working on his hand placement to help him rush the passer. He knows he is behind the other young guns at his position — Jerod Mayo and Gary Guyton, who were rookies last year, and Crable’s good friend and former Michigan teammate Pierre Woods is a likely starter — and isn’t afraid to receive guidance from his peers.

“They’ve played; they’ve done a lot of things, so I have to make my mark and play and try to add to what they’ve already done,” he said. “I feel like they’ve got a lot of game experience — it’s like they’re vets and I’m a rookie, so I get to take a lot of criticism from them, get to ask a lot of questions of them, because they’ve played.”

“It feels great being back out there,’’ said Warren. “It’s been a long time coming.’’

Warren, 28, was supposed to start camp on time, but the team didn’t want to take the risk of rushing him back.

“It wasn’t the plan they brought up a month ago,’’ said Warren. “I felt like I was ready to go, but my body wasn’t ready yet. We made sure to take the proper, calculated steps.’’

Warren, who said he had been working to stay in shape, was back at his usual left end spot during practice.

“The game is about repetition, and that’s the only way to try and get better,’’ said Warren, who missed nine days of camp. “I did a few extra laps at the end there. It’s just a matter of getting that rust off.’’
