Times announced they are closing the Boston Globe if they dont get union concessions. What would happen to Boston.com and our friend Mike Reiss? He has been my favoriate source of reliable info on the NEP

Hopefully the Patriots would pick him up and give him some web space to continue his job.

Well Boston.com would likely still be up and running. Perhaps Reiss would still blog for them?

I know one thing, I will NOT rely on the Herald for Patriots news.

I think this is a negotiation ploy more than a real threat. The Times will sell off the Globe for pennies on the dollar before they just close the thing down.

Besides, considering the following that Reiss has in this area, either the ProJo or Herald would snap him up if he was suddenly unemployed because the Globe was shut down.

Think the Globe will continue, if they do not it may be our loss.. the Pats already have a newspaper staff.. Paul Perillo et al...do not know if the salaries are comparable or not to make it worthwhile for Reiss.

Reiss started as a blogger. He'd be the last guy to be left out in the cold in the new media order.

He was working at the Patriots as a writer with Patriots Football Weekly as well, Reiss is good people and will end up doing well for himself - My only concern is that if this does happen - He could be hired by another paper outside the NE area to be a beat writer for the local team.

Mike has already been at Patriots Football Weekly, I'm sure he does not want to go back and I'm sure the salary is no where near what he is making currently - However all those jobs are "subsidized" by the appearances they do on TV and Radio.

Of course, when faced with no job - Peoples outlook on what is and what is not a good job can change quickly.

He would be the absolute only reason for me to pick up the herald again if those guys were smart enough to hire him and give him an obscene salary.

he could just as easily spin out his role into a new entity and likely make more.

I for one would read him were he to go to the Herald but why wouldn't the likely move be for him to continue bloging on Boston.com? The NYT/Globe intends to maintain the Boston.com website. Reiss would be an attraction to the site geting hits.

No need to panic over the potential loss of Pravda Boston. Reiss will still be a feature of Boston.com the net only outlet.

He could replace Schefter on the NFL Network. Or god forbid, he could go to BSPN, where he would be forced to go anti-pats or risk being beat up by Schlereth, Hoge, Jackson, Wingo, Ditka, Clayton, Chris Carter...

If the Herald would hire Reiss as a direct replacement for letting TomASSe go, I would even subscribe.

Think for a minute, assuming that the Herald has astute buiness managers, firing the fat Tufts grad and hiring Reiss would be a big net gain in readers. Not that newspaper folk are smart enough to make something like that happen.

Given the quality of Mike's work I am sure he would get another poition to cover the Pats. He is outstanding at what he does. We have been lucky to have him, Curran and SMY working the PAts best over the past few years.

Why doesn't Bob Kraft buy the Globe?

Good synergy for the paper/cardboard business, they have some attractive real estate, etc?

I can't imagine that Reiss isn't highly marketable as an NFL Beat Reporter to cover any team in the league (especially in the AFC and AFC East, which he knows very well already) tho the timing might be bad for 2009. He's head and shoulders above the idiots who cover the Jets in New York, for example.

I just hope he doesn't go the Horrald, unless they get rid of Tomass and others as part of the deal. I'd hate to have to stop reading Reiss' stuff, but, after Spygate, I wouldn't give that piece of trash "newspaper" my clicks on-line or my cash at the Newsstand under any circumstances.
